Photo Essay III: San Diego

Yesterday I was talked into going to San Diego with the family (well my parents) to visit my brother [livejournal.com profile] nibot and see the sights. I should have realized this would mean spending hours at the beach. But at least I got a lot of pictures.
You can see this same photo essay with a few bonus pictures in photobucket, but because photobucket is lame it scrambled it somewhat out of order. Also the pictures will be bigger tehre if you want to see bigger versions.

Photo Essay: San Diego

11:20 - this rather crappy picture from the car window is just for reference as this is the San Onofre nuclear power station referenced earlier.

12:15 - Mother and Father patiently wait after summoning [livejournal.com profile] nibot from the dark recesses of his lair. Eventually I had to call him and inform him "Roust yourself out of bed, hide the evidence of your alcoholic habits, and get the disreputable females out the back door, we are here." Several minutes later he came to the door (608 on the left there).

Immediately after opening the door Tobin resumed his previous state on a conveniently located couch. Notice the diagram of how to remove lasagna on one of the three whiteboards visible.

Eventually he gathered enough energy to check his email. This in turn gave him enough energy to function in a nominally acceptable manner for daily activities. Also notice that the physical manifestation of splorg.org is in the foreground on the right. When you go to splorg.org you are accessing the computer pictured. Also note there are two more whiteboards visible, making a total of five in this room captured on camera, I forget if there were more.

Then we walked to Tobin's favourite mexican restaurant. The burrito I had there caused my lip to swell up (upper left side). Tobin probably planned this well in advance.

1:50 - Next we went to Balboa Park, an area of museums, arboretums the San Diego Zoo (I'm waiting for Kristy to visit to make an expedition into the zoo itself).

Here Tobin ([livejournal.com profile] nibot), Mother ([livejournal.com profile] furzicle), and Father can be seen trotting towards the arboretum (pic 2). Inside I saw more than one person taking pictures of the botanical oddities with their camera-phones.

Also they have the world's largest organ at Balboa Park. We were shocked to find an old lady playing with it.

4:00 - Finally we spent most of the day at the beach at La Jolla Shores. Tobin and Paternal Unit are in the foreground wearing black and green swim trunks, respectively. For extra points find them.

This is the point the fireworks were launched from. As you can see we had a clear view of it, which was excellent.

And there was this pier at the end of the beach but it was part of the Scripps Institute of Oceanography (where Tobin currently works) and closed to the public.

Did someone leave the faucet on? I'm told this is probably more or less sea water pumped for one reason or another by the Scripps Institute. I gave it the smell test and it didn't score very highly however.

I walked all the way around the corner beyond the pier and came upon this secret fortress. It appears to be a private residence.. and only connected to the outside world by that trolly track going up the cliff!! (Well and the beach as well)

" Who says money doesn't bring happiness and a sweet ass personal rail system?" (Steved). Remember the lower right hand corner of this picture.

Note the falcon on the roof. I thought it was just one of those stuffed things they put on roofs to scare away seagulls, until it took a crap. Another picture of the tram-way and falcon, and two more of the beach fortress itself: 1, 2.

Alright remember the lower right hand corner of that other picture? I was walking over there and very nearly stepped on Boldric here.

"OMG WTF - someone's taking a picture of me??" As you can see, Boldric is alive.

Yes I named him myself. Note the seal belly button. And the cute little seal ears in the previous picture. Please be respectful and do not note the seal private parts. (= and on that note here's a sign Boldric apparently missed:

Then I walked back. This is just on the far side of the pier from the main beach.

This picture doesn't do justice to this excellent sound castle.

People were still in the water in force when it got a might chilly out there.

No Independance Day would be complete without the ginormous flying saucers coming through the clouds.

And eventually there was nothing left to do but sit and wait for the fireworks. Yes I never changed into swim trunks, because I hate the beach.

Year Ago Today: 4th of July Party - This was without a doubt the best party of last summer. My friends [livejournal.com profile] aimeedarling and [livejournal.com profile] ashleelauren came along, but that was several livejournal names ago for both of them and I'm not sure I have current ones even now. Anyway it was at Katie D'Agistino's awesome place in the "art district" of Santa Ana and we all watched fireworks from the roof. And my sub-headline a year ago was "Basically I Need a New Job, Basically," in reference to Wild Rivers. How astute of me. Anyway, I can't emphasize enough how much I enjoyed that party so like.. check out the link.

Yea I was wondering if he was unwell myself, his colouring looked to me to be within acceptable norms, but the way he remained lying there regardless of the people that came by and gawked at him. To his credit when I jumped off a rock nearby he lifted his head about and opened his mouth as if about to bark at me or perhaps snap at some vulnerable fingers.. memories of that helped dissuade me from entertaining thoughts of patting him (I wouldn't have anyway.. petting large wild animals = bad idea).

hil-Arious post.. although I do sort of wonder why you linked specifically to the April 30, 2004 version of the Splorg Page. And also of course I am [livejournal.com profile] nibot and not [livejournal.com profile] nitot. I wonder what the deal is with that personal railway gizmo.

oh, nevermind. I see that that's the default page. hmm. that's funny.

I've made it my personal mission to proliferate it. In fact just seconds ago I sent the link to my friend Vanessa (she's a pirate).

So, who do you think would win? It is tough but I am going with the zombies.

Re: pirates

[identity profile] emosnail.livejournal.com 2004-07-08 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I dunno it depends on the context... if the pirates got the jump on the zombies.. or if the zombies caught em drinking... in the latter case I think the zombies wouldn't be able to get out of a drinking contest and might get their asses kicked. Then again, maybe zombies are mad drinkers? This all really is a topic that needs more attention.

Perhaps we should ask Livejournal's [livejournal.com profile] trembyle, he would appear to be an expert on the matter at hand.

i think the fortress might be part of the UCSD marine biology department or something like that. i'll have to check that out sometime though...
