A Silly Little Encounter

Once upon a time it was a week and a half ago, and I was 445 miles north of here. I was walking back to my aunt and uncle's place in Davis late Saturday night.

Suddenly I stopped and stood there. Walking the opposite direction through the front yards on the same side of the street as me was a large raccoon. He stopped and stood there.

On his hind legs. Like a standing bear (did you know raccoons are most closely related to bears?). We stood there stairing at eachother for a minute. Then I backpaced a few steps so there was a tree between he and I. After a moment I peeked around it and watched him scamper off between two houses.

Then a cat trotted over from across the front of one of the houses and also watched the raccoon disappear off to the back. After the raccoon disappeared the cat turned and looked at me, as if to say "wtf was that about?" I shrugged and continued on my way.

Tonight I fly out to Atlanta, Georgia (god forbid I go a full week without travelling far and wide ;D ). Will be back on Sunday.

Raccoons are about as smart as we are.

He's probably blogging about the encounter right now.

You Can Establish Relations

Leave a little bit of brandy and milk, and maybe a bit of overripe meat out every night. Also, talk to them when you see them.

Things can get really interesting.

The easiest critters to actually do this with are crows, but raccoons are not hard.

I've established relations with possums both here and at a previous place I lived. I think possums are pretty cool.

And in Ireland we had a crow we named Fred that we trained to at least come down to the window and take food from our hands. (=
