Although a brief scanning of the wikipedia article doesn't seem to mention it, I believe it was built on the site of the main mosque that had been in the city during the moorish period. One will note that it looks kind of mosque-ish in its layout (ie the outlying towers and square shape rather than standard cathedral cruciform) and I recon the built right off the old mosque.
