You probably have some kind of virus. Something is seriously wrong if files disappear.
Mozilla also goes berserk if you run out of disk space, making warning messages and so forth. But it won't delete your files.
You can make a real copyright symbol by enterying "
©
" — it looks like this: ©
Most file-sharing programs are spy-ware and pipelines for worms, virueses, and trojans. That's probably your problem. Install latest Norton. UC Berkeley gives it to students here for free; Davis might do something similar.
