Heartwarming Anecdote of the Day

Today I was up in Merced, California, meeting a member of the ASUCM Supreme Court for coffee. There were a bunch of people milling around about where the line should be but most of them seemed to have already ordered and shortly they wandered off. The guy in front of me ordered and then there was me and this grouchy looking old guy standing there.
"Were you here first?" I asked him, stepping back. He really looked sour, I was almost afraid to say anything to him, but I also am not about to cut off an old guy.
Without really answering me he steps up to the register. "I'll have a a drip coffee, and whatever he wants" he said indicating at me. "Sometimes it pays to be polite" he said with a smile as he paid for my iced coffee.

Unrelated Picture of the Day

Picture from Epic Roadtrip 2007 I don't THINK I put up yet.
While this picture is from a sunrise in Wyoming, I did drive past similar windmills and a similar looking sunset today.

I love those windmills...they look so crazy up close.

I don't think I've ever been up close to one, but they look like they are in reality FRIGGEN HUGE

[identity profile] jnel.livejournal.com 2008-11-17 06:52 am (UTC)(link)

That was really nice. Enlarged the pic so I could see it. Nice! My husband loves Wyoming with a passion. He lived there for 6 years prior to us meeting.

The above version has the top and bottom cropped off to make a panorama look.

Here's the full full version:

Yeah Wyoming was really pretty. So empty of people!

Also thanks for your nice comments (=

I am very impressed with the way you handled the coffee shop gentleman.

[identity profile] emo-snal.livejournal.com 2008-11-17 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks. I find the thought of coming off as a rude person to be kind of mortifying

My heart's cockles are truly warmed by that story. It does indeed pay to be polite. Most of the time.

There are definitely times, like when I was a cashier and people would treat me like some kind of machine, that when someone would actually show human kindness I just wanted to jump over the counter and thank them profusely.

My heart is certainly warmed. The thing is, this world needs more nice people. People like you.

California also needs to let gay people marry....oh wait, wrong topic.

Hahahaha (=

[identity profile] lunabee.livejournal.com 2008-11-17 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
That is really awesome. I should do that for someone else sometime.

[identity profile] emo-snal.livejournal.com 2008-11-17 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah that was really awesome of him. Especially since it was SO unexpected. I was like ugh I don't want to talk to this guy he looks like he'll bite my head off...

[identity profile] alycewilson.livejournal.com 2008-11-17 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I call that story instant karma.

[identity profile] jinx.livejournal.com 2008-11-17 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I really like hearing stories like that, no matter how small and everyday they are. Thanks for sharing it!

hi, I just wanted to comment. You added me as a friend, which is fine but my journal is friends only... so you won't be seeing much. Just an FYI...

[identity profile] emo-snal.livejournal.com 2008-11-17 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah. Hi. Yeah I found you on the friending frenzy at [livejournal.com profile] morning_stand, left you a comment there.

[identity profile] wagrobanite.livejournal.com 2008-11-17 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't mind people friending me, but I just let them know that if they don't comment on my friends only post, or ask before friending me, I generally don't friend back. Part of it has to do with I've had stalker issues (both online and in the real world) and also has to do with me being a private person. Plus, from looking at your profile, we have nothing in common...*shrugs* I think being friends with people I have at least one thing in common with.

[identity profile] emo-snal.livejournal.com 2008-11-18 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
My listed interests was actually a joke. I guess I should change it. Interests we have in common looking at your list include anthropology, historical fiction, history and travel. I wrote a historical fiction entry a short time ago and have been resisting posting more entries about history as I'm unclear how interested my friends list is. I think there's a lot of really interesting stories in history that nearly no one knows about and ought to be told.

In fact I'm gonna change my listed interests right now, cause I can see how that might give a bad impression of me. I think you'll find my lj is a lot more than beer and burritos (though not nearly enough possums).

You by no means have to friend me back, I just saw you in the friending frenzy and a cursory investigation led me to believe you'd be interesting to get to know and we'd share some interests.

[identity profile] wagrobanite.livejournal.com 2008-11-18 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
ohh ok... that was interesting! I'll go ahead and friend you back :)

Thanks (=

just wanna say hi new friend dude - alright if I return the friending?

[identity profile] emo-snal.livejournal.com 2008-11-18 03:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes certainly (= Hi.

[identity profile] fsk8ing-judge.livejournal.com 2008-11-23 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, it sure does pay to be polite. :)
