ASUCD apparently isn't the only campus governing body with drama around here. Recently the Academic Senate, which is composed of tenured faculty, issued a report stating that they "not only control instruction, by and large it is senate members who provide it as well." In response, the Academic Federation, composed of the nontenured faculty, fired back their own report, asserting that the Senate does not "control" instruction, nor do they do a majority of the teaching, as roughly half of the teaching positions are held by non-tenured staff. (Aggie article)
More recently, the other day a member of the Academic Federation began a "no confidence" petition regarding the Chancellor. If 50 Federation members sign the petition it will be sent to the Senate for a majority vote. The petition is regarding an apparent lawsuit cover-up.
A former Vice Chancellor, as Daviswiki says: "She was recently fired, subsequently threatened to sue, and was then given an interesting promotion that consists of a two year guaranteed salary with an annual increase of $20,000.00 [to 205,000.00 annually] with no requirement to perform any work (Which she has apparently fulfilled admirably, so far.) and a $50,000.00 payment to 'help her find new employment'." "The salary and transition payment alone add up to $460,000" (San Fransisco Chronicle). I wouldn't have known about this at all previous to today's Aggie article, except that I got an email over the summer from the Chancellor assuring me nothing dodgy was going on, and of course immediately became suspicious. Otherwise, however, Vanderhoef --or L-Vizzle as the ASUCD Senate likes to call him-- has been seemed pretty unshady, for example refusing to join Swords and Sandals until they started admitting women, and even then not joining them in their reindeer games.
And furthermore, this Friday Vanderhoef will be addressing the public during his quarterly "Brown Bag Lunch." However, it will be held in a room that latinos refuse to enter. Oops.

In Other News: There was this energy drink that for a brief time was everywhere, called "Kabbalah." But now its disappeared completely. According to the Fast & Sleazy clerk, "people felt uncomfortable with the religious sounding name." It was my favourite energy drink while it was available, I hope they remarket it.

Latest in ASUCD: Advisor Michael Tucker and éminence grise Mark Champagne apparently got together and decided that the allegations that some Court members should not in office were crap and people should STFU about it.

actually you can brownbag it with L-Vizzle at the cabernet room of the Silo on Friday. I don't think he'll be doing it at the AGR room for a long while since I was at that event and it didn't end well.

I read the Lupe article. *sigh*

"A march and protest were held on the Quad where additional demands were brought up, such as revoking Alpha Gamma Rho's privileges and asking the fraternity to provide two scholarships to Latino students each year for 10 years. Although the university's administration attempted to comply with some of the demands, many were not addressed and the issue was left unresolved."

I read the Lupe article as well. I think it's a pretty bad stereotype for a fraternity to have used, but I fail to see the applicability today. It was thirty years ago, 1975, and the Civil Rights Movement had barely secured voting and employment rights for people. Twenty years earlier, racial discrimination was a social norm.

A lot has changed in society over thirty years, and I don't think AGR should be held responsible for the sins of its its forefathers out to the seventh generation. Considering this is a college campus, we're out in four years and 4*7 = 28 < 30. I don't know why it has a room named after it in the Alumni Center, but I can assume it was for something good they did in the meantime. Or, y'know, money.

Either way, it was something that should be forgiven. Mandela and Tutu have forgiven even worse racial hatred and segregation which ended only fifteen years ago. In a place like a student organization with its extremely limited institutional memory, we should forgive them if for no other reason than the current brothers weren't even alive at the time of this song was used.

And speaking of limited institutional memory, ASUCD is in need of a lot of forgiveness too. In terms of the recent scandals, there have been a lot of mistakes made on all sides, myself included. For this, I would like to say that I am truly sorry, and I hope those offended parties will forgive me. I would hope that others would follow my lead, too. If for no other reason is that a government turned against itself is a government that doesn't get anything done.

thats a good point I hadn't thought of.. that none of the current brothers were even alive at the time.

Also that this is ridiculous in light of the serious racial conflict elsewhere which has been forgiven since then.

Good comment. Plus three points.

Way to go getting quoted in the Aggie talking about the Hoff.

I seem to be going through blog withdrawal, since you haven't updated for half a week. Oh well.

Also, you need to login to Nationstates plusquickwise in order to avoid account deletion.

As usual they got a critical part of my quote wrong. I said the SITUATION was irksome, not the petition specifically. The way its written makes it sound like I don't know why there is a petition out and am generally rather dim.
