Utah has strict alcohol laws, but they seem to be lightening up these days. Granted in order to serve alcohol a bar needs to be considered a private club. So that blows, paying a cover charge for a temp membership if you're not a member. Makes bar hopping really expensive. But yeah, the micro breweries are popular. There's more than the ones I named, those are just the ones off the top of my head. You can get Wasatch beers, and Uinta beers at the grocery store, and they have a bit higher alcohol point than the generic beers. I think Utah does that to encourage people to buy them, because it helps the state in the long run.
Fortunately I have access to the base liquor store, so I have a wider selection of beers. It's hard to find a regular 'ol draught Guinness in the state liquor stores. They only carry extra stout, which I'll drink, but is way to bitter for me.
There's a microbrewery here called Hoppers that makes my favorite hefeweizen - it's harder to find in stores though. They serve it on tap at Sizzlers for 4.50 a liter, which is a great deal AND the only place I have found that serves it on tap. (Not that I go to every bar in the city asking or anything either-) Hoppers actually has a restraunt locally that I have been meaning to go to when I have the cash.
The more popular alternative is Uinta - Golden Spike hefeweizen. It's pretty tasty, but not as smooth.
I don't think the Wasatch brewery makes a heff, but I'm not a huge fan of their beers. I did try their Pologamy Porter, I didn't like it right off the bat but could see myself "aquiring" the taste. Actually that was over a year ago, so now I'm curious to see what I think of it now. The name sure is fun, and pokes fun at the mormons. (actual now that I looked at the website they do make a heff. Brigams Root Beer makes me LOL.)
There's also Rooster's brewery. I haven't really tried many of their beers. There was a dark one, a berry one... I didn't like it. It was just too... tart, and sweet (for a beer) and that's some thing I don't associate with the taste of beers.
Personally my favorite is stouts. I like a good Guinness, or a Beamish if I can get my hands on one. I guess that's my Irish/Scottish/Welsh heratiage.
Hehe I love beer. I need to drink more varieties. It gets expensive though.
They're advertising a new beer on the Wasatch website called a double bock which has peaked my interest. I'll have to go pick me up some tomorrow.
