Happy birthday Staceyface (= ([livejournal.com profile] gratefuladdict)

***Edit: My letter to the editor was published (most suprisingly, in full almost full*!)

* I note they did edit out my reference to him showing up on newsbusters.

***Edit 2: The letter above ours is about the same author (Gustavo Arellano) accidentally using a racial slur on Poles, calling them "Polacks" instead of "Poles", oops!
And the letter after ours is some crazy person who "read on the internet" that the disappearance of bees is due to a nazi pesticide plant in the US that blew up in 2008 ...!!

I LOVE the letter above yours, about the Polish. Hilarious. And yours is great, very thorough.

and you got the headline! Bravo. Even though you didn't want to get published, isn't is awarding that you did?

Yes Actually (=

Yeah it is actually. I think part of the reason I didn't want to was because every time I've gotten a letter in before they've butchered it with their "edited for length" and its been rather unsatisfying. But like I said they only made minor omissions here, so I actually don't feel violated. (=

Are you part Polish? I am a quarter Polish, so I know about the "Polack" versus "Poles" distinction. It seems that a lot of non-Poles don't know it, though.

No I probably wouldn't have known it if it weren't for that it was pointing out in the letter. Still though, if I was writing for publication I think I probably would have used "Poles" if I was gonna just go with sometihng and if not would have looked it up.

The general rule is that if it's a term that's used in an ethnic joke, it's best to avoid it!

Fellow Pole. (1/2 at least)

I'm just surprised that they didn't mention that [livejournal.com profile] emo_snal is actually a CARD CARRYING MEMBER of the Carlyle Group and thus more likely than not caused that explosion in order to further his secret bee agenda.

I suspect he is behind most conspiracies bandied about on the Internet. ^_^

And hello, fellow Pole! My maternal grandfather was a second-generation Pole, but he anglicized his name and wouldn't teach us anything about his culture. "I'm an American," he always said. Still, he made great potato pancakes.

The great thing about being American is that, the more of a mongrel you are, the more places you can claim to have as your homeland. People from other places are always baffled by meeting Americans who steadfastly tell them, "I am Norwegian," or "I am German," when in fact it was their great, great, Granddad who actually came over on the boat! And of course that same American will say equally sincerely a week later, "I am Irish!"

What is S.N.A.L?

I'm deathly afraid of bees.

SNAL

You know, I'm not sure. I'm pretty sure the L probably stands for Livejournal. Its a backronym you see.

Any ideas as to what the S.N.A. might stand for would be appreciated. (=

It could be Saturday Night At Livejournal, but then you'd be restricted to posting once per week.

I'll keep thinking.

That's good - I could follow it with the tagline "it's ALWAYS Saturday Night here at [livejournal.com profile] emo_snal" :D

I don't mean to come across as rude or anything but how did you find me. You need to tell me who you are and what made you add me before I add you back. If you can't do this then I ask you to remove me from your friends list. Thank you.

I didn't really learn anything about the culture either - and my both grandparents on my father's side were first generation!

And no, the name wasn't changed at all.

As someone who is actually Polish, I have never been offended by the term "Polack." I can see why people are, and I can definitely see how it's a borderline racial slur here in Ameria. But what I've always found funny is that in Polish the word for a Pole is "Polak." So if someone wanted to say "I'm a Pole," it would be "Jestem Polak" (the J is pronounced with a y sound). Perhaps that's why I never found it offensive, I just thought they were saying it right, haha.
