At an intersection today I saw a bum with a bum-sign begging for money, and next to him was one of those guys getting paid to wave around a ridiculous sign for Quiznos or something.
This of course made me wonder, couldn't they pay the bum to wave the sign around? (Well obv he probably didn't come in for a job interview or however they find those people who have little enough self respect to do that, but I mean IN THEORY). And then this raised another question -- or was the bum making more money per hour than the sign guy??
Cause I mean, the sign guy is probably making a minimum wage of $7 something an hour. The bum would only need probably 14 cars an hour to hand him their pocket change to beat or surpass that, and it seems pretty doable with all the cars coming off the offramp and stopping at hte red light there.

Picture of the Day - Circular Edition! - I realized this would have been the most appropriate picture of the day to go along with the circle discussion:

October 2006 -- I make a circular picture as the only way to crop distractions out of the upper and lower left corners while preserving the middle.

"Bumvertising" was a huge controversy here a few years ago...

When I was working in DC several years ago, I made friends with the guy who was always camped out in front of *$s every afternoon. He told me that he set up outside the Post Office in the mornings, then moved to the Capitol Hill *$s for the early afternoon, then called it a day and went home before rush hour really kicked in. He was pulling down about $45-50K a year, paid no income tax and owned a small condo in Alexandria. I told him I was obviously in the wrong line of work.

My story is similar to one posted above.
Chicago has a huge number of people begging on the streets. And wouldn't you know it, a few weeks ago one of the local newspapers did a story about beggars and found out one in particular was pulling down over three hundred dollars a day, tax free. He knew where to beg, the best time of the day, and the best rap. He was also and idiot and allowed his picture to be printed in the paper, although he refused to give his name. Nevertheless, someone recognized him, called the IRS, and now he's in BIG trouble.

We haven't had as many street beggers as in the past. I think they passed a law that you can't pan handle on corners or something. Occasionally, you'll see one but they don't stay long in one spot. There was a big stink a few years back about some guy bragging that he was making like 50k a year begging on this one off ramp. His picture got circulated and someone got pissed off and took a few shots at him. He never came back and no one ever sat at that off ramp again. I mean people work for a living and this f*^k is getting 50k to stand on a street corner and beg?

I believe you answered your own question. The bum is making way more than minimum wage out there panhandling.

I saw a story on CNN a couple weeks ago about a site that did pay a bum to hold a sign for them. Then it turned into a mission to get donations to improve his life:

I saw this bum once who had a sign that said "I'm not going to lie this is going to booze." I thought it was pretty funny.
