Dad: "So any thoughts on the big game?"

Me: "Who's playing? What sport is this again? All I know is that I heard a rumour one of the teams has never been to the Superbowl before so I guess I'm rooting for them"

Dad: "Well one of the teams is the New Orleans Saints, and they're playing... ANOTHER TEAM!" [my brother [livejournal.com profile] nibot lives in Louisiana]

Dad: "Mom thought it was happening in Honolulu. I think it's Miami though"

Yeah we're not the biggest followers of football, my family. But now I'm off to a superbowl party!

And as a teaser to the TRULY EPIC LJI entry [livejournal.com profile] zia_narratora and I are working up, see my new icon! :D

I have to watch the game. ugh. Drew didn't find a super bowl party elsewhere so he invited a friend over.. didn't know she wanted to watch the game either! I will be knitting and making jewelry for charity and other uncharacteristic girly things.

Aviv and I are not looking forward to the game. When the Saints won the playoff game, everyone on our street rushed out of their homes screaming and shooting their guns up in the air. We are anticipating much craziness going on tonight and are staying as far away from the French Quarter as possible.

It ended up being like it was after the playoff game. People were running down our street screaming and cheering at the top of their lungs. Lots of people were popping fireworks and those who didn't have fireworks got out their guns and shot them into the air. And then came the sounds of police sirens as they made their way towards downtown. A friend of ours works at a karaoke bar in the French Quarter and he said the the streets were absolutely packed and that people were going nuts down there. The cops gave up trying to navigate traffic so after the win they just blocked all the roads completely. People were climbing onto the police cars and jumped up and down with excitement while their friends rocked the cars. But the police didn't seem to mind because they were also excited about the win.

And the Coast Guard was up all night because those people who were out on their boats, like shrimpers, were so excited about the win that they wanted to shoot their fireworks and if they didn't have any fireworks or ran out, they shot their rescue flares instead. And since the Coast Guard has to respond to every rescue flare... well, needless to say they were quite busy.

Aviv wanted to stay as far away from the craziness as possible and played Mass Effect 2 all night with the volume turned up, trying to block out all the screaming on our street. Unfortunately for him it was so busy last night that the Coasties on duty needed to call in their backup: Aviv!

Our next-door-neighbor is a schoolteacher and she said that New Orleans public schools are canceling classes today in celebration of the Saints' victory.

I guess you're the only American who's not interested in it ... It was even on German TV - like ... in the middle of the night! ;-)

I only watched about half of the fourth quarter. I'm not much of a football fan, and even less of a superbowl fan ... but I wanted to be prepared just in case I got roped into a football-related conversation at work today.

So did you feel adequately prepared? Apparently the commercials are more of the next day water cooler conversation ... and I didn't really find any particularly funny.

Just barely. I saw the intercepted pass that the Saints turned into a touchdown, so I could at least talk about that.

I used to watch a ton of football when I was a little kid, but I kind of grew out of it around age 13. As a result, I don't watch football very often and whenever I do, I'm always stunned by all of the things about football that have changed since I used to watch it in the 60s and 70s. Those computer-graphic "first down lines" that they project on images of the field always amaze me, and incredible commercialization of the game is kind of shocking too.

But the thing that I really can't figure out is, why do football players spend so much time slapping each other on the ass these days? They definitely didn't used to do that when I watched football in the 70s, and I can't even think of another public, social situation where it's considered acceptable to slap another man on the ass (except maybe basketball.)

Of course, I didn't bring that up in my work-place conversation about the super-bowl ... but I think it's a good question, none the less.
