This was really interesting! I'd always assumed the queen was simply larger (as in the bottom picture), but not with different coloration. Actually, the one in that bottom picture creeps me out. Looks less like a bee and more like a random bug. :O
I'd never heard of workers attacking their queens before, but you certainly found an ill-tempered bunch! Maybe they were waiting for someone with the right "smell."
