I'm sorry I don't have enough time at the moment to read your very interesting journal back a ways and get a fuller context... but I intend to when my workload lightens up :-)
The best way to get good at portraits is to take them, which is just what you're doing so, terrific job because personally, I find taking them pretty intimidating.
Hmm I'm not familiar with offset bounce flash? I'm not very versed in the use of flash, I usually do my best to get by without flashes because when I use it I probably don't use it well, just get a lot of glare /:
Yeah portraits are neat. I'm especially envious of the photographers who go to the same places as I do and come out with all kinds of awesome portraits. Like this guy, he's amazing.
I'm not very good at manouvering people into the right light and such to get a good portrait. I'm actually a bit shy I guess about really getting involved in composing a portrait beyond just snapping a picture when it all happens to come together on its own. There was a woman in this same facility I wanted to get a picture of just like this that I actually asked if I could take a portrait of and she readily agreed and I tried to manouver her where I wanted her but she stood too far away from the machine and not in the light and I just didn;t have to heart to really chase her into the right place so the picture didn't come out at all. d:
