In my inexpert conjecture, (1) At that time and place, bathing was not too common, so they probably did carry about and were used to smelling fairly strong bodily odors, and (2) urine was commonly used in tanning hides, so I'm guessing they saw the benefits of bleaching with urine and had few of the phobias associated with the substance that we modern people have.
