It's not part of this but I did write a scene that explains that, that went in to an article published in the American Bee Journal:

August 2nd, 2011 – I was driving Jerry Hayes, then of the long-running The Classroom section of the American Bee Journal (now editor of Bee Culture) back to his hotel after he had guest spoken for the Orange County Beekeeper's Association. As we drove down the bland boulevards near the airport I mentioned that I'd really been inspired by articles in the American Bee Journal about beekeeping projects abroad. In particular, just the previous month there had been an article about beekeeping in Nagaland, India, by Alaskan beekeeper Stephen Petersen. I had actually emailed Stephen asking if he needed an assistant, but he did not. Jerry gave me the names of numerous organizations that put on such projects and encouraged me to apply to them. I promptly did so, and within a year I was stepping out into the humid evening air of Nigeria on a project with Winrock International.

I felt it warranted inclusion there for its flagrant name dropping ;D but for this piece I felt it wasnt' exciting enough to fit into the first chapter, although I do feel like it's ab it of a weakness that the main problem of the first half of the chapter just kind of seems to solve itself. It's worth considering including I guess (I'd obviously expand the above a bit more, I imagine mentioning the rain reflecting off the boulevards and the giant sailing ship model in his hotel lobby). It's also worth mentioning because the Stephen Petersen mentioned actually shows up himself later when I meet him in Tanzania, which makes that bit feel a bit like it's come full circle.

What do you think about how well that might fit into the first chapter? [livejournal.com profile] waitingman you've been good enough to read all this closely, I'd be curious about your opinion as well? (:
