Big Brother Gallagher

   A recent ASUCD constitutional amendment proposal which passed through the ASUCD Senate by a vote of nine in favour, one against, with two abstentions, was vetoed by ASUCD President Kalen Gallagher (file photo)last Thursday. If passed it would have put the amendment proposal on the ballot of the next ASUCD election, where if passed by a majority it would have made measures to increase student fees require a 2/3rds majority to pass.
   ASUCD senator Donald Cohen-Cutler was quoted in the Aggie as saying "an override by the senate would look worse than if the senate were to pass the amendment in the form of urgent legistlation," the latter an option which, apparently unbeknownst to Cohen-Cutler, would still be subject to a presidential veto. Eight senators are needed however to override a veto. Senators Cohen-Cutler and Yu both expressed interest in finding a compromise with Gallagher. Senator Jessica Engels said she was pleased with Gallagher's decision to veto their legislation.
   President Gallagher noted that his signature brings "more legitimacy" to the legislation, and said he preferred the senate allow him to veto the bill, adding that his veto was "not a negative thing."


   Representatives of the new Orwellian ASUCD Party commented "Big brother Gallagher clearly knows best. The senate is right to not override the veto. Students should continue to do as they have in the past and blindly approve fee increases by the majority margin."


   UCD student Joe Fitzmorris in an exclusive interview with our staff commented "they fuck us over just like the california legislature, only the latter does it more professionally"

Gallagher responded that the average student does not know the history behind student fees and would probably vote "blindly" on the measure.

Yeah, I find that line extremely ironic. I mean thats the point: nearly everything passes the majority vote, because students do in fact vote "blindly." He is afraid that if this was on the ballot, the students will once again "blindly" vote, and PASS it, thereby eliminating their right to so easily pass measures in the future.


I firmly believe that gallagher is doing this because the UCD Administration made him. No one with purely student founded motivations would act as he is doing.

Duh.

Presidents that come from the Student Focus ticket are notorious for being puppets of the administration or of Swords and Sandals. I really have never seen them work for student interests, and it's pretty disgusting.

From Larry right on down through the top admin, right on into the most rich, conservative, white male students... ok, so that's not entirely true, as they've started adding some token women and minorities. They as a group don't actually do anything, they just sit around and talk. Somehow, the shit they talk about seems to come to reality when there's a Focus president (they waited quite a while before trying the Campus Expansion initiative).

I've never actually asked Kalen if he's a member, but I'd put my money on it. Someone should ask-- technically, they are required to tell the truth if asked.

Hmm, we should survey DPS and see how many of them are members. I wouldn't put it past Cameron to be a member too.

And I'm bummed that they don't seem to be having the yearly leadership retreat this year? I heard it was going to be halloween and I tohught that was wack but at this point I haven't even heard anything about this weekend...


Is there any evidence of htis organization one can find anywhere, such as a webpage or I dunno symbol on a wall or something? I'm quite intrigued.

There is one, as far as I know. Sapana has mentioned it on her LJ, and I've heard tell of it from a couple other senators. I just left a message for Cameron asking him about it (specifically, why you haven't heard about it-- but I am his nagging wife so it's what I do).
