Water, Fire, & Ice

   So I emerge from my little cave here into the living-room, dressed like a 13th century Russian warlord (big furry russian hat (ushanka), wrapped in blanket like a thick cape - because its freakin cold in here), to find that the pilot light in our heater has gone out for the millionth time. While roommate Jason is working on that I proceed into the kitchen to prepare a pot pie (50 cents each at safeway!). Then I notice that the kitchen is flooding. Jason abandones the closet of piping that is the heating apparatus to investigate this situation (he'd just repaired the dishwasher), when roommate Chen appears to announce that our internet access has gone down again.


   Incidently he reported that one of the usernames of someone on the Trees' network is "sinfulvirgins.com" or something along those lines, so maybe our bandwidth is being consumed by someone in the trees hosting a pornography site? (I don't really feel like trying to confirm the site or story)

we read the brothers karamazov by fyodor dostoyevsky(now probably one of my favorite books), and we are currently reading a collection of alexander pushkin's poetry. we will also be reading poetry/stories/etc. by pasternak, tolstoy, solzhenitzen, akhmatova, tsvetayeva, mandelstamm and yevtushenko. i'm excited.

Russian novels

Russian novels are crazy. They all have about a million characters, and every character is randomly referred to by either their first name, last name, or patronymic (middle name / father's first name), or completely unexpected nickname (for example Alexandra is shorted to "Sashie," etc). I guess thats what happens when you have nothing better to do over long winters...
