Been busy killin bees. We work 7am to 7pm 6 days a week. d=
Today as Jeremy & I arrived at a swarm call, this painter that was working on the house saunters over to us like he's some kind of hero and proudly declares he just squirted the bees with a hose. Great so now instead of one clump of docile bees we have wet irritated bees all over the place, and a wet tree to drip all over me while I work on them, go team!
So politely that the sauce was completely lost on him, Jeremy responds "yeah actually you just made our job a whole lot harder." To illustrate that he really missed the point the painter cheerfully adds "yeah I was about to hose them down again when you showed up" as if he deserves a medal for even thinking about it.
So yeah, lesson of the day: please don't hose-down bees. It may amaze you to learn that they've actually adapted to being wet. It just makes the situation messy.

In other news, I finally got around to editing the pictures from Jenn de la Vega's party on the 4th.

Date: 2006-07-19 08:59 pm (UTC)When dealing with pees or any other insect pest, I would use a hose with one hand and a can of pesticide in the other. I would bring spare cans.
I would then hose the nest (which was usually located on the roof of the 2nd floor, just to make my life more annoying) however I would hose is gently.
This results in insects being very angry at me, and flying out at me. Depending on the amount of angry insects, I might choose to simply spray them with a precision strike in the air, or soak them with a broad spray of the hose (this results in them prompty falling to ground, where I saturation bomb them with pesticide)
Eventually after most of the waves of insects have left the nest and been exterminated, I would jet the hose into a nozzle designed to weaken the nests hold on the roof- eventually it would fall and I would follow it with the pesticide and more saturation pesticide bombing when it hit the ground.
In later years I have moved to my airsoft rifle, as I found that insects react slower to 400 fps bbs entering their nests, but in turn results in more structural nest damage- so I get the nest down faster and with smaller waves- usually resulting in the majority of insects suddenly surprised by the freefallnature of their living arrangement, and then equally surprised at the large amount of pesticide suddenly being dumped on them.
I found this method to be the most satisfying personally, as it lets me inflect the maximum amount of pain on these insects, and judging by the news reports, Israel agrees.
