Self-determination is a concept first espoused in Woodrow Wilson's Fourteen Points. Basically, it means that a people have the right to choose their own form of government and the leaders that that government would produce to head it.

Independent of the definition and whether or not it's a good thing (I think most people agree that it is) is the question of whether you view this group or that group as fighting for self-determination. I personally believe Palestinian groups such as Hamas are fighting for it, and Hezbollah and the like on their behalf. This cause, I support. Their methods, I do not; nor do I support the portion of their memberships and platforms that is simply anti-Israeli or worse, anti-Jewish.

And what, pray tell, gives the Khizballah the right to fight on the behalf of the Palestinians?

Hez are hardly fighting for Palestinians.

In the beginning, they were anti-Palestinian, pro Shia power- thats what they were, a pro Shia power group. Later on as they got bigger, and the memory of the Palestinian occupation grew and and the Israeli occupation grew longer and longer, they adopted the Palestinian cause in order to gain greater support from both Shia's and Sunni's.

Almost no one in the Middle East really gives a shit about the Palestinians- it's all about power, and the palestines make a great rallying call.

Teh exact motivations for Hez undertaking this new offensive are simply that in recent years- with the memory of Israel's occupation FINALLY fading and hope for the future shining brighter, Hez was loosing political influence and influence with the people overall. They could easily predict Isreal's OMFGEWTFPWNAGE response, and that it would turn almost 100% of Lebanese civilians to Hez's side by the end.

They were motivated to act like this NOW by Iran (and or Syria) who wanted to draw attention away from it's Nuke program, give credence to it's leaders mad anti semetic ramblings, and attempt to finally achieve what Iran failed at with it's revolution- become a major force in Arab/Islam.

People have foolishly suggested that the way to get Hez to stop the attacks is to pressure Syria- Hez was originally anti Syrian, and has gone through many phases of Pro-Syria and Anti-Syria over the years. If Syria denounced Hez and tried to get them to stop, Hez would simply give them the finger and move more of it's resources to the supply line from Iran.

Israel's main problem is that it's falling right into Hez's/iran's hands with it's actions- also they can't do PR for shit.

Apologies for the double post, I've switched the a and the e in Israel for years and today was no exception.
