Many of you have probably (never) wondered what my exciting homeland of Mission Viejo* looks like. Well, here it is (or at least scenes that can be found less than a mile from my house):

(Well first some teasers in front of the cut, no?)

The illustrious front door from which I issue forth to victory!

Typical I think we need to mow the lawn

Mum stands amid the mustard Mum crosses one of MV's most formiddable rivers stinging nettles! vast meadows! Disregard the picture of the front door, we actually all live in huts like this one View looking out from inside the previously pictures bamboo mound
Its taller than mum!

And Flickr now lets you host videos! Here is what it would look like if a mountain lion fangoriously chased down and pounced upon my mother:

(Not sure why this isn't working perfectly but if you click on the broken looking box above it should work. If not try going here)

See also, all these pictures and more on flickr.

* Mission Viejo, where there is neither a Mission, nor is it old (founded in 1988!). And in fact the correct Spanish phrase to mean the same thing should be "Misión Vieja."

You make Orange County look pretty and natureish. Too bad nature hates me.

Yeah, those aren't typical Mission Viejo scenes.

Illustrated by the fact that I lived there for 20 years, and rarely saw such sights :P

yeah well, in order to get the sights you spent most of your time seeing I'd need to sneak in and take a screenshot of your computer no? ;)

How's the wife and kids?

You wound me sir, I only meant I was expecting typical Mission Viejo scenes- soccer moms running the kids around the lake mission viejo fields in hummers, rich people entering in their gated communities, hordes of middle aged, slightly overweight people running around in track clothes, etc.

The wife is doing fine :P

That is WAY WAY greener than where I lived in CA... Walnut Creek was all brown all the time. At least, that's how my memory of it is :P

I postulate that there are places like this near nearly every city. It requires that you leave the paved trail, occasionally cross barbed wire fences with signs that say KEEP OUT, (though definitely not in this case,)and generally keep poking around for places you haven't been before. You definitely won't find these places if you're only looking at the mall.

And I guarantee there are places like this near walnut creek, particularly in April. Have you been around the reservoir?

....the resovoir I know of is the sewage that runs under the middle school -_-;

heh I'm not sure I went to the mall a single time while I was out there. Lots of hiking around sugarloaf open space and el diablo. Maybe it was greener in winter with all the rain but my memories are all of lots of dead yellow and brown expanses.

Other interesting facts about Mission Viejo:
* The development company (Mission Viejo Company) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Philip Morris, the tobacco giant.
* There is a clone city near Denver, Colorado.

Holy crap really? It was essentially developed by Philip Morris?

And clone city in what sense? Exact same layout?

1. it appears that philip morris owned mission viejo company from 1972 to 1997
2. our clones probably live near Alicia Pkwy & Marguerite Pkwy, Aurora, Colorado

Kind Creepy!
