Holy crap, Colombia totally pwned the FARC rebels.

Basically the narco-terrorist rebels' greatest accomplishment was that they were holding a former presidential candidate and three american contracters hostage. The Colombian government managed to trick the rebel leader holding the hostages ("Cesar") that the supreme commander of the rebels wanted to see him and the rebels. So Cesar got on one of two helicopters with all the rebels and they took off without incident to go see the wizard. However the entire thing was a ruse! Once in flight Cesar was tied up and the shocked hostages freed. Not a single shot was fired and the rebels were deprived of their most significant bargaining chip.

This comes on the heels of the deaths of several notable rebel commanders over the last year, and increasing numbers of defecting rebels.

Also of note, of course you will recall that earlier in the year evidence surfaced that Hugo Chaves, president of neighbouring Venezuala, had been supporting the terrorist organization.

And of course, speaking of presidential candidate prisoners of war in Colombia, McCain happened to be hanging out there at the time. Silly.

He didn't hear about it until he was on his way to Mexico, either. While the hostages were all landing he was making a speech about free trade in Colombia.

One of Chavez's top aides was witnessed or videotaped hugging Raul Reyes, FARC's number two who was killed in Ecuador earlier in the year.

Its funny it wasn't orchestrated because it seems like such a confluence of coincidences -- John McCain, a presidential candidate famous for being held as a prisoner of war, happens to be THERE specifically of all places the day a presidential candidate being held as a prisoner of war is rescued.

I suppose there's no way for him to take credit for it but it seems like a good spin for him.

Also, yeah. I forget the details offhand, I think I may have blogged about it, but I remember some pretty damning evidence linking Chavez to FARC had come up a few months ago.
