Just now I was sitting here and suddenly heard the white hen that likes to perch on the outside counter by the kitchen squawking wildly. I jumped up, grabbed the flashlight and made a mad dash downstairs and outside.

Immediately I see a coyote (looked like a medium sized lean tan dog) dash across the yard and into the bushes on the side. Moments later I see the coyote on TOP of the wall (!) heading towards the front yard.
I then confirm the health of the chicken. She appears unscathed but very flustered, still clucking botheredly. So I coax her back to her ledge and pat her and keep her company until she calms down.
While I'm standing there I hear rustling from around the corner where the chicken-shed is (mother hen and her chicks still spend the night in the safety of the shed). Was there a second coyote? As I shine my flashlight over there two sinister red eyes appear around the corner!! As it moves its eyes are locked unnervingly on me.
But then I realize its the cat. She was cornere over there by the coyote as well I guess. I open the door to the house andd she eagerly scampers in. Her tail is all floofed up.

OH NO : (

That is such a sweet image of you patting the hen until she felt better.

Usually she doesn't let one pat her but she didn't seem to mind in this case (=

Sometimes late at night I can hear the yipping of the coyotes when they catch something. My house is up in the hills in beautiful San Marcos (gag). It was really creepy the first time I heard it, it sounded like what I thought hyenas would sound like..

I've never seen one by my house but I know they are there. My cats are indoor cats because of this. I've also had deer come down the hill by my yard, I was sitting outside one time on the phone and I looked up and there were three deer about 10-15 feet away. That was kind of cool.

I'm glad your animals are all okay :)

Yeah it was actually really creepy when I thought the cat was a coyote, since as I said it was staring at me and all I could see was red eyes. Normally coyotes just dart away so I was like holy shit why is it looking at me like that?!?

Of course the real learning point is that coyotes can leap five foot walls!

We're also hoping that the cat took a lesson about the dangers of the night. How do you explain to a sweet but naive animal that really bad things await her out there in that fun, fun, Disneyland of adventure?

PS: Mark-- are you contributing to the delinquency of a minor chicken?
