   Facebook seems to have rearranged things so that the entire set up now strongly resembles TWITTER. Now Facebook is Twitter with a profile page and picture ... and Myspace is still trying to become Facebook.

   I, for one, still think the popularity of Twitter says something disturbing about society.



   In other news, a local radio station, Jack FM, likes to play silly self deprecating soundbites. Things like "We can't believe you're still listening to us" and "Jack FM - its better than static?" It always amuses me. But they played one today that I thought was interesting and I'm sure went completely over the heads of 99% of their listeners:
   "If there was an award for most awards in radio ... we'd gladly accept it on behalf of the Navajo"

   Now the question is ... do you get it?

The Mrs. is all twitterpated and facebooked solid. Personally, I don't get it. . . I'll stick to my, apparently, very pedestrian LiveUrinal.

I'm about to order an unassembled starter set from Dadant (http://www.dadant.com). Here's hoping I can get things set up before it's too late to hive a colony!

I won't be catching swarms, not this year, anyway. . . in fact, I've never seen feral bees swarm. I'll probably buy a pound of A. m. ligustica. . . Happy little bees! I'm in Front Royal, Virginia at the north end of the Shenandoah Valley (zone 6b) The danger of our last hard frost here expires around Mother's Day. Is this the type of timing I need to consider? Even if this season's nothing more than getting my equipment together I'm still going to.

Also I don't know much about frost and bees, we don't have frost here. :D Another good beekeeping source is these forums. Maybe post in Beekeeping 101 or some such and ask if there's any beekeepers in your area. Or even call your local branch of Dadant and ask them. Beekeepers are an amazingly interconnected lot and are usually happy to share their wisdom with enthusiastic newcomers.

Nope, my daughter's 10 and the Mrs' boy is 17, but they each live with their respective other parent. Comparetively, bees ought to be a cake walk.

Thanks for the linky-dinks and your offer of help and encouragement! I think I've made a really solid contact with another beekeeper in the valley through someone my mom works with. Here's to hope and lots of perdy flowers!

Also on my Epic Roadtrip 2009 very very tentatively planned for this summer, I was thinking about heading out east through the central area of the United States, which could mean that we might end up near where you are. If so we could meet up and talk both bees and distilling!

That would be awesome! We're actually about 3 miles north of the northern-most entrance to Skyline Drive (exit 6 off Rt 66. . . sinister, huh?) in a sleepy little Civil War era town. We're always up for meeting our LJ Friends! Hit me up if you find yourself at this end of the Shenandoah valley, and if it's equally cool with my lady-friend we can even put you up for the night.
