Day 9 - Monday, May 18th - Took the train to Montserrat, a jagged mountain of rock that juts up amid otherwise small rolling hills (the name literally means "serrated mounted"). Perched up near the top of this mountain is a monastery, which I took a cable car to get to.
The main buildings of the monastery are very beautiful and neat, and then there's trails up around the surrounding jagged mountaintops which are fun to explore. These trails had some awesome views and various ruins of old hermitages scattered about and such.
At one point I followed a narrow ancient stone stair that led up at a steep angle and over a ridge and down the other side. I was about to decide it went nowhere and turn around when I heard voices up ahead. So I continued and came out on a main trail with tourists on it. Fortunately they were speaking English so I asked them where the trail we were on came and went from. Confused as to how I could be on the trial and not know they asked where I had just came from. I pointed up and they looked at me like I was insane. (:
Narrow Paths -- Some versions of Arthurian legend put the Holy Grail on Montserrat. Incidentally I found an old-fashioned metal pitcher of water in a grotto on the mountain ... maybe that was it!
