I am sore. Who would have thought hauling up sails is HARD! ): Or that the worst part about balancing on a yard arm 40 ft up is that you're balancing on your stomach, which, for me at least, starts to feel really uncomfortable pretty shortly.

Anyway, I took a lot of photos yesterday, and so far have only gotten around to putting five or six up. But here's a preview:

Picture of the Day

And now, I've got to go back to the Tall Ship festival to pretend I know what I'm talking about for the masses. (:

Tomorrow (Sunday) the festival is continuing at Dana Point. I don't know if they're doing another cannon battle that evening but you can at least photo them in port. And they'll presumably need to sail out but they might be doing that monday. Sorry I don't know more details but hey its 3:30 in the morning :D

Just checked the schedule and they will indeed be sailing about at sunset again today. Spots on the ships themselves are probably sold out but one should be able to get some decent shots from shore, esp if one has a good zoom lense.

Love the photo, and I am very impressed that you are working the festival. I sail, but certainly not Tall Ships. Although, when they come into Chicago, we always go down to see them. They're due here, again, next August.

I've got no previous sailing experience, so I'm learning everything from scratch, and damn there's a lot to learn! (:

Saturday was my first time out on the ship at sail, my first time up the mast while at sea (and only my second time up the mast at all). I went up just for the novelty of it but by the end they were like "we need more people to help haul up the sails, get up there!!" and I was like "aaaaah!"

Yeah they really threw me in there!!

And actually what intimidated me the most about hauling up the sails is I'm ashamed to say I don't know any knots :[ and one has to of course tie up the sails once they're hauled up. But it sure was scare at first stepping out onto the yard arm!!!

Uh.. yeah

So bucko, try to haul up a Yard Arm arm while in 10+ foot seas or pull up 18 sails during a storm with Gail force winds! ...Just saying. ^_^ Hope you had fun you landlubber.

40 Feet?! Are You Kidding Me?! Man, When I was a sailor we would have to climb 140 feet in 60 knots of wind during a blizzard in the North Atlantic!

You and your spoiled SoCal weather.

You Sicken me. =p

Oh and don't forget if you get the chance climb the main mast to the very top and kiss the Pennant. Do it or you are no sailor. (okay so I am happy and impressed that you went out to sea and I be hugely jealous)

Sorry, had to Razzle.

40 ft was a wild guess at the height of the main course, I did go all the way up to the top top and hang out up there a bit.

I was joking with me mum that while you have the twin sparrows, I should get a tattoo of a sparrow toenail or something. (:

I hope sometime when you're down here something is going on at the harbour and you can skylark the rigging with me.
