Someone had asked me awhile ago about Varroa mites (a major cause of Honeybee mortality) in New Zealand. I just found an answer to that, so I'm going to post it here rather than dredge through comments:
"[Varroa mites were introduced] to New Zealand's north island (2000) and the south in 2004, leading to a loss of 2000 beekeepers [(presumably out of business, not dead)] and 30,000 hives 'that's about 2,000,000,000 bees.'" (badly constructed sentence in sic)

This from Dr Malcolm Sanford's article in the most recent edition of American Bee Journal and says it can be found on the web at apis.shorturl.com but I sure as hell can't find it. d=

Edit: It can be found here and he references this "good article on bees in Australia" (which I have not read.
