Varroa Mites in New Zealand
Jul. 29th, 2008 09:11 amSomeone had asked me awhile ago about Varroa mites (a major cause of Honeybee mortality) in New Zealand. I just found an answer to that, so I'm going to post it here rather than dredge through comments:
This from Dr Malcolm Sanford's article in the most recent edition of American Bee Journal and says it can be found on the web atapis.shorturl.com but I sure as hell can't find it. d=
Edit: It can be found here and he references this "good article on bees in Australia" (which I have not read.
"[Varroa mites were introduced] to New Zealand's north island (2000) and the south in 2004, leading to a loss of 2000 beekeepers [(presumably out of business, not dead)] and 30,000 hives 'that's about 2,000,000,000 bees.'" (badly constructed sentence in sic)
