And it's not even 9am monday morning yet and...

This morning Professor Pelliteri of U of Wisconsin got back to me that earwigs will probably eat the small pests of beehives (varroa mites and hive beetles), which is cool ... and potentially revolutionary if we can make extensive use of this. More field research will be necessary (:

AND

I'm now working on a patent application for the beevac! Boss says he'll share joint credit with me on the patent.. so I might have a patent in my name soon!! :D

Great news on the beevac. You might revolutionize an industry.

Lucky bastich!

:D

Good Luck with it. I really hope it kicks @$$ and takes names.

Co-inventor of beevac.

Just the best resume line EVER!

Indeed! :D

But seriously, even not applying for jobs remotely related to engineering or anything, I think actually having a patent --and not just some crap vanity patent that's something useless-- I think will look aces on job applications and things. Says I'm smart and liable to make real innovations in whatever I am doing.

Seriously, if I was hiring and noticed somebody had patented something, it would definitely catch my eye.

I've never heard that earwigs would eat varroa mites .... Interesting. Although, even if they do, they are so incredibly nasty that I would not want to have them again around here
(when we bought the house everything was full of earwigs....)

The beevac sounds interesting! I have thought about something similar, but everyone said the suction and all would be harmful for the bees...

Yeah earlier prototypes had too strong a motor on the vaccuum and we had problems with bee surivival rate. We finally got a much lower horsepower one and it seems to result in 0% suction-related mortality. (:

Well, I heard they might not die instantly, but the suction can have long-lasting ill effects on their behavior...dunno

Please do not find credible use for the icky crawly silverfish.

Please find that they're horrible creatures we must exterminate from the planet.

Really. They're gross.

Silverfish vs Earwigs!

Ah yeah no silverfish are something different, and yeah there's something distasteful about them.

For whatever reason though I simply don't find earwigs gross at all

I love this poem. Have you read it?

Also, have you ever heard of this blog?

LIFE OF A QUEEN

CHILDHOOD

For two days her lineage is in doubt,
then someone deciphers the secret message.
They build a pendulous chamber
for her, and stuff her with sweets.

Workers keep bringing her royal jelly.
She knows nothing of other lives,
about digging in purple crocus
and round-dances in the sun.

Poor and frail little rich girl,
she grows immense in her hothouse.
Whenever she tries to stop eating,
they open her mouth and force it down.

THE FLIGHT

She marries him in mid-air;
for a moment
he is ennobled, a prince.

She gives the signal
for their embrace;
over too soon. O, nevermore.

Bruised, she drags herself from
his dead body,
finds her way back exhausted.

She is bathed, curtains are drawn.
Ten thousand lives
settle inside her belly.

Now to the only labor she knows.
She remembers
nothing of him, or their fall.

THE RECLUSE

They make it plain
her term is over.
No one comes;
they let her starve.

The masses, her children,
whip up sweets
for a young beauty
who is getting fat.

Nothing to do.
Her ovaries paper,
her sperm sac dust,
she shrivels away.

A crew disassembles
her royal cell.
Outside, a nation
crowns its queen.

Potential...

I see great potential in your beevac, but used in warfare. Imagine flipping the switch and bringing it into reverse — you'll be able to shoot bees at your enemies! They'll never see it coming! They'll certainly hear it though...

It's definitely actually occurred to me that during the middle ages they could have loaded beehives into catapults and catapulted them into the enemy ranks for extremely good effect.
