Zombies

So I go up to the cashier at Rubio's. Things are a bit slow, there's no one else in line. I have eye contact with the smiling cashier as I approach.
"Hi, how are you today?" I ask.
She doesn't blink, she doesn't stop smiling, she doesn't answer.
"Okay, uh, I'll have a baja burrito" I finally say after an awkward silence and she springs into life asking me all her standard questions regarding the order.

I was once a cashier. I used to love it when the very occasional customer would actually acknowledge me as a human being and not some kind of robotic servatron droid. I try to make a point of engaging cashiers I encounter some human interaction to try to brighten their day. To find one that seemed holy unable to break out of zombie mode was rather disappointing, and frankly I felt it was kind of rude of her to just leave me hanging awkwardly there.

Anyway, here's a totally unrelated picture from my weekend.

I have been disliking my cashier-run-ins lately or at least with a couple places, lol. I seem to always get people who seem instantly rude and weirdly unfriendly for no reason when I just want to buy something.

Hilarious picture. Do you know the people in it?

How odd. BTW did you see my pic from the Carolina Ren Faire? I had a little bee crawling all over me while I was watching the joust, he was quite interested in the mead on my gloves. Normally I would have been terrified of bees, but after reading your journal for awhile, I was not so afraid of him and actually picked him up off of another patron when he landed on her and she was afraid of him so I reached over and coaxed him onto my glove.

Ah! It's hard to tell but I think it looks like a Vespula germanica, or yellow jacket. Was it construction yellow and black or more of an orange?

Maybe it wasn't rudeness; maybe she was in shock that someone had actually acknowledged her as something other than just another nameless, faceless drone there for no other reason than to cater to the self absorbed egotistical masses who don't notice the little people out there who handle the scut work that thay themselves are too good to do. /rant

Sorry.

She didn't look shocked though, she looked.... utterly and completely expressionless. d: Well I mean she was smiling but it was so devoid of change as to be expressionless.

Having been a casier myself more than once, that smile is so plastered on our faces and glued in place no matter the circumstance that it is often times near impossible to remove it.

I could very well be wrong though and it could have been rudeness. I just seem to be channeling my inner Tyler Durden tonight. LOL Since I am currently out of a job and pretty much all of my jobs have been scut work I tend to be a little over proctective of the workers of those kind of jobs. They are all too often looked down upon by the higher class customers.

That is weird about the cashier just totally disregarding you. I hate when customers just throw their stuff at me or start rattling off their phone number without letting me even open the search window first. But personally I have to say that I hate that question. Does anybody ever want a straight answer to "how are you doing?" I want to just say "I kinda have to poop, but my next break isn't for another fifteen minutes so I'm just holding it in," and see what happens.

Funny pic. What's up with some cashiers these days. You just can't be nice to some people.
