So I wrote an article for the American Bee Journal, which was accepted for publication. I'm pretty excited about that, since the ABJ is a nationally distributed monthly publication of great repute, and even my future employer in Australia informs me "oh yeah we get the ABJ here, it's the best bee journal in the world!"

Submitted another article to the local paper, attention to the travel section, since they sometimes publish guest articles. ...no response from those jackasses.

I've got some free time, stories to tell, and I like writing. Is it true that sometimes you can even get paid for articles? Anyone know anything about this? And regardless of whether they're going to fill my pocket with doubloons, anyone have any other recommended places I might be able to get an article in?

Yay! The ABJ is pretty much the best thing ever.

Do you get Bee Culture magazine? The articles are frequently not nearly of the same quality -- sometimes I read it and think "wow they'll publish anything!" Incidentally BC said they were gonna publish my Melissa story and I never heard back from them. I should give them a prod.

No, I don't! I subscribed to ABJ because you recommended it and we love it! And yes, you should. Published Bee Author!

Oh. Bee Culture is good for, when you've read everything in the latest ABJ but still hanker for more ;D but like I said, it's not nearly as good.

You could try:

I've been in it three times. My first two pieces were rejected though so keep trying if they reject you. I recommended them to another LJ friend and she was published too.

No pay except a copy of the magazine and the "credit" for a resume or whatever. But they are nice, even when they reject. It can take awhile to hear back. They take photos too.

CONGRATS on your article! As far as your questions, it really depends on what you're looking for; there are numerous paying gigs for writers - you have to find your audience (of course).
