Livejournal Idol .... now at Dreamwidth!

   It was a writing contest called ("the real") Livejournal Idol that originally turned this specific livejournal into more than a hollow experiment that had emerged from a prank. Despite that I have near a loathing for the kind of reality television that "Livejournal Idol" would seem to be mimicking, I have found i to be a thoroughly fun contest and have participated in I believe every season (its almost yearly I think) since I discovered it in ... 2009? One gets a prompt to write once a week, and to keep the heat under you people are eliminated every week! Simple as that! Mostly.

   Remember how everyone has been abandoning livejournal for Dreamwidth? Well apparently now Livejournal Idol has gone there to. Livejournal Idol. Let that sink in. Gary, the maniacal djinni who runs the thing, says its just an experiment to test the waters over there but.. that's what I said about starting this livejournal ;)

   I believe we can still participate FROM here and I for one intend to do that. I do have a dreamwidth account but I think I'll participate from here, I think that's a thing one can do.

   So all this is to say, this is my official note that I'm joining this season, and you should too (:

I have a DW account and in fact I used to write there then postcross here, but I stopped doing that because this is here where I have a lot of contacts, in DW people hardly ever interacted with me.

That's a real problem at Dreamwidth--- there seems to be almost no interaction, and it seems to be difficult to look for people there.

My biggest beef with them is a seemingly tiny thing. I can embed google maps on livejournal, which I like to do to give context to my travelogue entries, that always comes out broken in dreamwidth and not fixable, they've disabled map embedding because apparently it doesn't work with mobile viewing. Which is really weird. Like, fine, let me deal with it being broken when viewed mobile at least make it work on a computer screen!

Well that and the no interaction. That probably is the real reason I don't just move there wholesale. but the broken embedded maps thing sure annoys me!!!

I told Gary tat I would love to participate, and start writing again, but I'm not going over to Dreamwidth to do so. Quite aside from writing them here, I odn't want to have to go over there to find out what the prompts are, how the voting is going, etc...

I need to write more, there's a lot to tell, but I'm not crossing the streams here. LJ is home.

IF it works out over there, I may rotate mini seasons. Or have regular seasons at LJ and special seasons at DW. The exodus pretty much split the numbers of "I'm going" and "I'm staying until the lights are turned out" evenly. I want to give people the chance to play but I understand the moral objections to LJ right now. (all of the Chechnya/Putin stuff)

As zhent said though "LJ is my home".

The nice thing about Dreamwidth is that you can set it up to automatically crosspost to LJ. You can still take comments both places if you want to, and many people do.

I've been at LJ since late 2004; I'm not leaving anytime soon. But I do keep a mirror site at Dreamwidth, just in case some weird blip in Russian politics makes LJ close down.

#1 First thing I noticed when only half your page showed up (and hence not the bottom of the page) was the blurry white hive boxes. Those are beehives, I said to myself.
#2 And then I saw the eucalypt blossom and said to myself, That's a eucalypt blossom.
#3 And then, I saw your fingernails (by now I realized it was you, viz the eucalypts, and said Those are farmer's fingernails.
