The current state of things:

Australia: we haven't had any cases in this state in 21 days now. They are very slowly easing up restrictions. Masks are still mandatory inside but while outdoors one merely needs to have one on them and wear it "if you can't social distance" (ie, most Aussies won't). Melbournians have been released from the "ring of steel" and flooded in the coastal areas down here in historical levels the first weekend they were free. We were a bit leery but they don't appear to have brought any cases with them. There's still a handful of cases in other states, including a recent outbreak of 17 cases in the neighboring state of South Australia (apparently, a cleaner at a quarantine hotel got it and then an employee at a pizza place got it and infected many people? I'm not very well plugged in to Australian news though).

United States:

The coronavirus epidemic is completely out of control with President Trump not even pretending to be doing anything about it, recently golfing instead of attending the G20 summit meeting about the virus. Deaths are above the second wave levels and creeping up to surpass the heights of the first wave, with hospitals overwhelmed.

It looks like they're expecting vaccines to become available in the US in mid December.

Ethiopia: you're probably not following the situation in Ethiopia but it seems to be having a small civil war. Let me see if I can briefly and simply explain it for you. Tigray is a northern province bordering Eritrea. At the end of the civil war that ended in 1990 with the defeat of the oppressive national communist regime (the Derg), Tigray was a preeminent power in Ethiopia and remained so until as recently as 2018 or 19 when they, for reasons that aren't quite clear to me, did not end up in the ruling coalition in parliament. The immediate cause of the current conflict seems to have been that the national prime minister (Abiy Ahmed, seemingly usually cited as Abiy), declared there would be no elections this year due to coronavirus. Tigray went ahead and held elections anyway, leading Abiy to declare the new Tigray government illegitimate, and that has what has escalated to airstrikes on the Tigrayan capital (Mekelle) and as of the present moment apparently national government tanks are surrounding the capital and Abiy is vowing "no mercy" 'for civilians in Mekelle.
To be fair, Tigray was seen as having exercised overwhelming influence over Ethiopia for most of the past three decades, but I must say as to the immediate casus belli it seems to me Tigray was in the right to have elections and it doesn't seem worth pounding the civilian population of mekelle into the sand over.

I'm following this very closely because I've spent time in Mekelle and Tigray, and have friends there, and it breaks my heart to imagine its peaceful cobblestone streets being shot up, and I'm very worried for my many friends and acquaintances there.

I think in some recent footage I saw the tall building on the right there has been damaged by an airstrike

The pizza guy lied to contact tracers. His lie forced a lockdown of sometime like 1.7 million people.

Yeah I heard that. Bet he's not too popular around there. Was there a connection between the quarantine hotel cleaner and the pizza guy?

Thanks for your explanation about Ethiopia. I haven't been able to make sense of it from the news, and that makes it much clearer. DAMN. I hope Abiy backs off and doesn't destroy the city and kill people!

Its very ironic now that Abiy received the Nobel Peace Prize last year. And as well of course the (Burmese?) PM who received the Nobel Prize, Aung San Suu Kwi turned out a bit genocidal,, the Peace Prize Committee isn't picking them very successfully right now.

I liked Obama in general but when the Peace Corps committee chose him for the prize before he had even been in office 100 days and definitely hadn't done anything yet I was like "WHAAAAT???" I think they really need to rethink their selection process

Australians are doing this right.

A vaccine isn't going to happen for us until mid-2021. The lucky ones will get it earlier. Can't wait until we get some new leadership around here. Two more months...

I don't quite dare to say it out loud but it seems possible Australia could stamp it out completely, I mean we already have in several states, and this state was in the throws of a raging outbreak just like two months ago and now three weeks without a single one.

They are speculating the US could reach herd immunity in May, but that requires people to stop being fuck ups.

I thought the Ethiopia situation also involves the Nile dam, which is causing tensions with Eritrea and Sudan as well. There was an article about that in the WaPo a couple of weeks ago.

The dam is definitely causing tensions with Sudan and Egypt but it is not located in Tigray and I don't think effects Tigray or Eritrea.

the vaccine *might* be available mid-december, but only in small quantities, and only for high-risk people like first-responders. or the rich who can pay thru the nose to get it first. it wont be available in larger quantities for the general public for quite some time.

Ah goodo. I haven't spent any time in NSW really but I'd like to explore it a bit. This week I'm going up to Sydney for a conference! I haven't been there in a decade and even that was probably collectively 48 hours.

Our BFFs just went back to Ethiopia from an evacuation for COVID and are now on shelter in place orders in Addis. *sigh* My twitter is full of news on this every evening because their internet is being blocked and I want to make sure they're OK. Because everyone needs the extra stress right now, huh?

A lot of my neighbors are from Ethiopia, I don't talk to them very much because most of them don't speak English, they must be really scared.

Aw you should try to talk to them.

I went to my favorite Ethiopian restaurant here, and the proprietor, who is from Addis, supported the war. I'm not so keen to go back to his restaurant now.

Not only do most of them not speak English, I don't even know what language they speak in Ethiopia so I really can't talk to them much.

Haha the best guess is Amharic unless they speak Tigrayinya which is of course the language of the Tigrayan side of this civil war. I'd try to share some simple phrases with you except I found the language impossible to wrap my brain around lol.

Another cool thing though is they have a liturgical language, Ge'ez, which is only spoken in church, kind of like how the catholic church insisted on latin for so long.

It's so good to hear some good news about the COVID situation, congratulations to you guys in Australia! We rarely hear about the situation in Ethiopia and Eritrea, especially the latest since we have little information on what is going on.

Yeah it's been interesting to compare to the war in Ukraine, which I've been able to follow more closely even though I personally care less about it, but it's just hard to get as much information about Ethiopia
