Where to Start
So much to write about here, where to start? In addition to my usual adventures of Wednesday and Thursday, there was an article about me in the Aggie on Thursday (and a picture in which I looked like a turnip), and the adventures of the Senate meeting Thursday evening.

Overriding Urgency
We had already been working on legislation to make some needed changes in the Judicial Codes. One change in particular, that if two cases are filed simulteniously the time limit for the Court to address them shall not be ticking down concurrently (ie we have ten days to deal with a case; previously we'd have ten days to deal with two cases as well if they were filed in the same day; this changes the latter situation to twenty days for the second case), was suddenly urgently necessary as Case # 24 and # 25 were filed in the same day. It was therefore necessary to call the resolution up "urgent" at the Senate meetings as opposed to letting it go through commissions for a week first.
Neither official "author" was at the meeting, so first the Presiding Member of Senate (the ASUCD Vice President) declared it could not be considered. I then pointed out that ASUCD Standing Rule Four allows the Author's Designee (ie me) to represent the legislation. My sudden citing of this obscure rule caused a bit of rustling, and somewhere I heard someone snicker "well he IS the chief justice" in a "of course he knows these obscure rules" way.
After everyone had duly verified this rule, the Presiding Member declared that she did not have confirmation of the Author's intention to make me her Designee so she could not accept this. I responded with "I am in no position to overrule you at this time."
ASUCD Senator Adam Barr then motioned to suspend the bylaws and let me represent the bill. This would take a two thirds majority, but the vote went along strictly party lines, which resulted of course in a 6-6 vote.
Several senators then expressed their disgust at the previous voting, followed by a few previously dissenting senators claiming to have not fully understood the urgency, and it was voted on again, achieving the necessary 2/3rds to be considered.
It was decided to eliminate all operatives except the urgent one, which was my preference as well, and the remaining operative was passed.

Picture in the Paper
Let's start with two main points about the article which will illustrate the rest.

1) The subtitle "Fricke cites conflict of interest with Greens" is completely erronious. I did not "cite" any conflict of interest with the Greens. If anything I refuted it. I believe current VP Paloma Perez or former president Sara Henry may have cited a conflict of interest with the greens, but clearly I did not.

2) The last line "Since ASUCD has uploaded all desired documents — with the exception of court documents — it was believed the case would not be heard by the court" sounds very unprofessional. Its not attributed to anyone in particular, and sounds more like the reporter's critical opinion than anything else.

In conclusion, I'm sure Aggie reporter Aimee Theron is a very nice person and may have had the best intentions as regards this, and I mean no insult to her or the Aggie, but I'm going to have to ask that she not report on court issues in the future. Individuals related to the case felt that the article was biased, as did individuals in government, and I haven't talked to the rest of the Court yet but I know I personally found a number of things misrepresented to the point that it negatively impacts the current cases and the court.

Wednesday
Wednesday I didn't have classes.. well except for the MST130 discussion I'm auditing on Wednesdays.
God I want to be in this class, but it conflicts with VEN3. Then again, I don't think I want to take it for credit - his assignments look pretty obscure and difficult. Anyway, this is MST130 - Medieval Warfare. Looking at the syllabus and there's too many topics I'd love to sit in on for me to even name a few here as was my original intention. ::sigh::
Anyway, aside from that class, I got what I think my nuclear physics teacher would have called "a metric buttload" of books, mostly for the russian classes. Then I lugged those around to the MST130 discussion, MUN meeting, and finally the Court meeting, where we formally considered and unanimously accepted cases # 24, # 25, and discussed my decision to absent myself from case # 24. With three vacancies and now myself absented they will have five Court Members available to meet the five member minimum quorum for the Case 24 Hearing.
Hearings were set at next Wednesday (04/14/04) at 20:00 in the De Carli room of the MU and following Wednesday (04/21/04) at 20:00 in the Fielder room of the MU, if any of you are for some reason interested .

Thursday
Learned about wine yeast in VEN3; the 1918-1920 civil war in Russia and use of armoured trains in combat in HIS138C; and rise of Muscovy during the late 14th century in HIS138A. And people say I write too much detail in my lj. (=
Then Kristy hated us because it was our five month anniversery and we were supposed to hang out but I had to scamper up to the 3rd floor and deal with ASUCD stuff. I got to see Kristy afterwords though and we'll have more of an anniversery today (Friday).

1) I need to go back and look at that picture again, because I can't figure out the turnip thing.
2) Roddy's paper topics rock. Much more interesting than any regular assignment.
3) That Aggie article sucked.
4) That Senate meeting sucked. I'm glad we (finally) got to see the judicial code leg, though.
