Just goes to show the power of totally whoring out your pictures by posting them to 6 groups, and giving it 71 tags. Including such tags as "garden" "engineer" and a whole bunch of strange things like "interestingness=3" and "top-v444". Is this some voodoo that fools search engines into thinking it's more interesting than it actually is?

Though I guess now I'm gonna go put my own bridge pictures up on the bridge group. Maybe I can get a third view out of it.

Photo Idol!!
Now speaking of competing photos, (and totally whoring oneself out) I was thinking the other day about a "LJ Idol" style LJ Photo contest. With all due credit to LJ Idol and the illustrious LJ Idol administrator Gary of course.
But yeah, I'm taking a photo class at the local JC right now, and we have weekly assignments (this week I have to come up with some portraits /: ) and I was thinking, it's like LJ Idol but with photos! ...and not getting voted out.
Anyway, it seems to me highly likely that there already is such a contest on LJ. Anyone know anything about this?

30 in 30 VI!
And speaking of shenanigans, June is quickly approaching, which is traditionally the time for 30 posts in 30 days. The ultimate event of the blogosphere. No one get's voted out, but about 2/3rds of people who make the attempt just can't hack it. So who's up to join the brave and valiant 30 in 30 elite? (:

I don't think submitting your pictures to groups and using lots of tags is whoring out your photos. It's the only way people are ever going to see them, generally. And the odd tags are quite possibly for personal use. AND and, other people can add tags.

Frankly, I like the composition of the second photo better. It IS overexposed but there's a lot going on that draws the eye. I love the color of your photo but the scale of the thing is lost.

So, I think your photo certainly deserves more views but if you haven't tagged it more generally, no one is going to find it.

Hmmm. What about this one?

I like this angle. It gives you more scope.

One of the cool things about the other shot is that it isn't taken on the bridge proper - the point of reference is an unusual one. I wonder if you were to crop to juuuuuuuuuuust above the planters if that would give you some of the same apart-but-part-of perspective on the scene. Hrmn.

You do a really nice job with the exposure on these.

Like this one better than the first. And I'm pretty sure I was one of the two who viewed the other one because I looked at all the pictures you had posted in that group.

(: aw thanks

I just wish I got a better shade of "sepiatone" on the sepia. I might have to try again on that (it's a colour photo that I'd tweaked, still have the colour original)

This one is better.

Notice that both this one and the other person's bridge photo have someone on the bridge.

Also, your one below, with the bridge in the background? There's something good going on in that one between the bridge in the background and the little rectangular power thingie or whatever it is towards the lower lefthand corner.

I agree about the composition.

If you don't blow your own horn, you don't even have a chance.

I feel bad I never got around to doing a wrap-up post last year. And not having done that, I don't recall how things looked by the time we all limped through the finish line.

But welcome back! Get the word out to your f-list because misery loves company ;D

Also I'm already stockpiling ideas (:

I'd be totally up for an Idol Photo thingy. That sounds like brilliant fun. And I can probably do the 30 posts in 30 days thing too. Even if some are one liners...

Yeah I'm excited about the photo thing. Wouldn't be suprised if such a thing already exists though. Hoping someone will advise me if it does. Maybe 30 in 30 will be my June project and the launching Photo Idol* will be my July project? (:

* leaning towards a name that doesn't involve idol though. Harkens too much to a TV show I don't watch. Not sure what name to go with though. ::wanders off pondering the details::

and I'll count you in on 30 in 30 :D

I like your picture a lot, but I must say, I also like the other one. I see why you say it is overexposed, but the composition is striking. Your photo, however, has a remarkable richness of color. Nice work.

I would definitely be interested in Photo Idol, or whatever you decide to call it.

30 in 30 sounds fun - I'd surely be willing to give it a try. All you have to do is post, right?

I want to, but I read the rules and I'm intimidated by the idea that every post has to be interesting to strangers and that I'm supposed to put a lid on my usual frivolous posts. I know I can post every day, but...

I guess I can try. :)

Aw don't be intimidated! Every entry doesn't have to be solid gold. The idea is just to TRY. (: And you don't have to like cease all non-30in30 posts -- I just put that in there because some people post like a dozen times a day and it floods the f-lists.

It's not good, talking down someone you are in competition with. It's not them that it makes look small.

Better to talk them up, even if (especially if) they don't really deserve it. It makes you look professional and magnanimous.

Yeah I mean, if there was a closer relationship between us, like I knew him personally or we had both purposefully taken the picture for a competition or something, then I'd surely not talk their picture down so much. In this case though it was just a random picture I found which I happened to think was extremely mediocre and was surprised by the huge success it seemed to be having. It's not even really about my picture, I just as easily could have just pointed to the many other great pictures of that bridge by other people which are at least as good or better but also only have like six views.

It's not as obvious with your picture that the tower thingy is part of the bridge. I think that's the big difference.

From: [identity profile] fsk8ing-judge.livejournal.com
That second photo could have been fixed in Photoshop. And I like the photographer's composition. But I prefer yours because you're not sure what's happening at the end of the bridge--I like the fall-off effect. The second photo is a really nice shot of a bridge; your photo is a really good shot that makes you think, makes you wonder. And the photographer who taught me always said anyone can take a nicely composed photo, but only an artist can stir the emotion. And you did, you made me wonder.

Date: 2009-04-27 05:05 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] emo-snal.livejournal.com
Yeah, exactly! The other person's picture here is just a picture of the bridge. Yes it's a pretty bridge, but there's absolutely nothing artistic or interesting about the picture other than the inherent qualities of the bridge itself. Also yes it looks like he tweaked up the saturation too much, which has also been bothering me.

I just did a meme where you were to post 8 days straight and I only made it to 7. 30? don't think I could unless I planned in advance.

Oh and you photograph, much better than the other. Don't whore yourself out, you want to still be able to respect yourself in the morning, right?

I belong to [livejournal.com profile] 100_snapshots but it's really nothing like what you're talking about.

Thanks. (:

Yeah posting every day sounds easy but its much easier said than done. Even having successfully completed 30 in 30 many times already, the thought of doing it again still fills me with a little fear and anxiety. But I've been stockpiling ideas. ... but then when you realized "I've been 'stockpiling ideas' for months and still only have about a week of them!" you realize just what a crazy undertaking it is!

I still think you should give it a shot ;D

Hmm that community sounds neat, but yeah not the idea I'm talking about.

I'm on my lunch break at work right now but later I'm gonna go look for your pictures for the 100 snapshots. (:

I haven't posted yet, I only just joined and I'm trying to do the themes with my daughter, when we both have a pic for a particular theme, then I'll post. I should do so by the end of the week though. I'll let you know.

Maybe I will give it a try. If you can do it successfully many times, I could hopefully be able to pull it off at least once anyway. What's the comms actual name? I should probably join.

[livejournal.com profile] 30in30, although it's barely coordinated there and the community is in a bit of disuse. The way I invision it, esp if a large number of people do it (which I think would be awesome), is for everyone to for themselves decide which other participants they want to keep track of. I've established the livejournal of [livejournal.com profile] arrrghonaut, whose purpose is basically to coordinate everyone I know is participating. So basically, go ahead and join [livejournal.com profile] 30in30 and if you end up doing it [livejournal.com profile] arrrghonaut should keep you abreast of who else is doing it and such and such.
