This year, say it with bees!!

Picture by my coworker Jeremy. Migratory swarms of honeybees are so docile you can ofen shape them with your bare hands!!! Unfortunately for these bees, if the swarm is found on the ground it is almost certainly because the queen is injured.

But to keep it cheerful we'll assume she was able to walk it off!

Musical Sunday! - Quebb - Dining With The Dead
My latest favourite song of the last day or two is this song by one of the tallship volunteers' band. I'm not sure how to describe it, it's like Eastern European meats bluegrass meets ballad. It's kind of eerie without being either cheerful or somber. If you listen to it I'd be curious how you'd describe it.

You can listen to it here if you go down to "dining with the dead," or download it here.

Lyrics
The nonbolded bits below are song only by the lead singer and then the bolded bit it all (or several at least) the band members in chorus:

Rise and shine, my dear,
It’s time to meet our guests.
We’d be pleased if you could
Wear your Sunday best.

You might be surprised at
Who I would invite.
The Dear Departed will be
Dining here tonight.

Turn the porch light on,
The recently deceased
Shortly will arrive and
Join us for a feast.

Find the silverware and
Linens clean and white.
The Dear Departed will be
Dining here tonight.

[CHORUS]
Seems I’m sleeping with the dead.
Might as well dine with them, too.
I can’t begin to see what’s
Going through your head,
But, you know,
I’m always there for you.

Light the candles, dear, and
Stir the consume.
Fill the glasses with a
Silky chardonnay.

Best behavior, kids,
We all must be polite.
The dear departed will be
Dining here tonight.

Hang the guest towels, dear, and
Close the bedroom door.
Place the hors d’oeuvres here and
Sweep the kitchen floor.

Avon hides the lines while
Valium hides the spite.
The dear departed will be
Dining here tonight.

[CHORUS]
Seems I’m sleeping with the dead.
Might as well dine with them, too.
I can’t begin to see what’s
Going through your head,
But, you know,
I’m always there for you.

[BRIDGE]
And Lord knows I try
To be the man that you would
Have me be.
But our pillows, dear, are like
Gravestones to me.

Gather in the hall and
Greet our company.
Show them to their chairs and
Smile convincingly.

Keep the glasses full and
Conversation light.
The dear departed will be
Dining here tonight.

Send the kids to bed and
Mask a subtle yawn.
Hope they take the hint and
Soon they will be gone.

No such luck, my dear, our
Masquerade was trite.
The dear departed will be
Staying here tonight.

[CHORUS]
Seems I’m sleeping with the dead.
Might as well dine with them, too.
I can’t begin to see what’s
Going through your head,
But, you know,
I’m always there for you.

[BRIDGE]
And Lord knows I try
To be the man that you would
Have me be.
But our pillows, dear, are like
Gravestones to meeeeee.

There's several more shots of it from different angles and where you can see the bees better, but I don't have them on this computer.

Jeremy shaped them thus and took the pictures to send to his fiancee :)

Did you know I'm contemplating a bee friendly garden this year? Any tips?

Bee Friendly Gardens

Oh um... there's definitely information out there if you google "bee friendly flowers" or "bee friendly gardens." I'd recommend trying to keep in mind not only honeybees but native bees (I see you're listed as being in "Raccoon City United States" (is that a real place??) .. honeybees aren't actually native to the americas). Native bees of course like native flowers (and I encourage planting native flowers anyway just because, you know, you gotta stick up for the natives). Another frequently overlooked fact about native bee gardens is don't put down sod or anything else that covers the soil, because a lot of them actually live in the ground.

The thought of touching bees with my bare hands to shape them has just sent shivers down my spine! The photo is very awesome though :)
I am thinking of heading up to Plan bee - http://slowfoodaustralia.com.au/2010/01/central-victoria-21-mar-2010-plan-bee/ - Looks like it could be an interesting day.

That's an amazing photo. :D (I am very frightened of bees, I confess, so the idea of touching a heap of 'em like that with my bare hands gives me the willies. Heck, getting close to that many would give me the willies! I nevertheless appreciate bees and think they're very important parts of the ecosystem... I just like to stay far away from them. ;) )

It's okay, the bees are also probably afraid of us. I'm not sure they consider us an important part of the ecosystem though ;)

Nah, they're just little arthropod robots. They operate on autopilot.

I hadn't thought of the bees being afraid of us, but it makes sense... we're so much larger than they are. I got scared by a bumblebee as a kid (though I've never been stung, if that makes sense), and somehow have never been comfortable with them since. That said, I do think they're fascinating, when I know they aren't going to sting me! (I'm more afraid of wasps and hornets, I admit.)

They are?? Wow, maybe I might like them better after all. :)

On a serious note, how do you mean, they're flying kittens? (I ask because you obviously know a lot about our buzzing friends, and the more I know about something I'm scared of, the more I can fight the fear.)

Haha oh it was sometihng someone said to a post awhile ago after I'd posted about bumblebees. Jut referring to the fact that they're so furry. Furry AND ADORABLE. :D

But let's see facts about bumblebees: for a long time it was said that according to known laws of physics they should not be able to fly. It has since been proven that they can. Additionally, while they fly they build up a static charge, which pulls the pollen to them when they land on a flower. Especially in cold climates, they will start buzzing before their wings actually start moving, this is because they can decouple the muscles from the wings and when it's cold they warm them up first !!!

That is an amazing photo. And you know what? I got a little stab in my heart when I read the queen is most likely injured. How sad.

Thanks for the song!

OK,I'll take you on your word that she simply needed to walk it off . . .

I just listened to the song and I loved it! The bells at the beginning were totally unexpected, and the lead singer's voice is amazing. And while his voice sounds like he should be singing about some sweet young thing, it doesn't sound strange to hear him singing about the dead. I can understand the confusion about how to describe the song. I would say, just damn good. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Yeah I listened to a bunch of their other songs and didn't like them nearly as much, but that one I've been listening to over and over again every so often since I discovered it. Now I'm going to go play it again. :D

That's a great shot! Can a hive recover if the queen is injured? What happens to them?

Date: 2010-02-15 05:50 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] emo-snal.livejournal.com
If she's injured or dies in the hive they can easily make another.

While they're out and about though there is no reproduction going on so... they best hope she pulls through!

:::chills:::

I hate to admit, but I am terrified of bees.

If the queen is injured, does that mean that all those bees will die, or will another bee rise to the occasion and become the Queen. Stupid question, probably....

Date: 2010-02-15 07:11 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] emo-snal.livejournal.com
No that's a fine question, I get asked it a lot. (:

In the hive they can easily make a new queen.

Out and about though, they better hope she pulls through, because they can only make new queens from larva, and they neglected to bring any larva with them!
