Interesting fact for persons living in the United States:

If you suffer from a disability (including a mental disability such as anxiety or depression) you are allowed, under the American Disabilities Act to have an emotional support animal in your housing even if there is a "no pet" policy (these animals do not have to be formally trained, they can be just animals that help you feel better). You have to get a note from a therapist or a physician but if you actually suffer from a disability this should not be a problem.

Also, managers are not allowed to charge an additional pet deposit for the service animal (a "pet" who helps in an emotional or physical way is no longer a pet but a "service animal") just because they think it might cause damage. You are liable for any damages your animal causes, but they are not allowed to assume.

Here is a website with a sample letter and much information about court cases involving this topic.

http://www.bazelon.org/issues/housing/infosheets/fhinfosheet6.html

And as Bob Barker says, spay or neuter your pets. Adopt from the pound or SPCA or rescue organizations if you can. They make wonderful animals and 1/3 of all animals in shelters are purebred animals. Food for thought.

EDIT: But please be aware and respectful of the fact that the service animal community is concerned about this being abused and making things harder for people with serious service animal needs.

Ladies & gentlemen, it is my esteemed pleasure to introduce you all to Pelekea Cachaça, a 12 week old siamese kitten and newest member of my family in Mission Viejo.
The name is rather an amalgamate of several proposed names. Allegedly "Pelekea" (or some similar spelling?) is Hawaiian for mischief (I haven't been able to fact-check this though, the best I could do is confirm that Pele is the hawaiian goddess of fire, lightning, etc). We expect to call her "Pele" for short, which in the spirit of recent world cup fervor & our Brazilian heritage, is the name of a famous Brazilian soccer player.
"Cachaça" (pronounced "ka SHA sa") is the national drink of Brazil, and is similar to tequila. It is the fourth most distilled spirit in the world (by volume), but you probably haven't heard of it because only 1.5% of it is exported from Brazil. We expect to shorten this to "Sasha."
The name Cachaça is also of course in keeping with the same theme as the kitten's cat-cousin Bailey.

So others are calling her "Pele," but I prefer "Sasha." I dunno, the cat just doesn't remind me of a soccer playing brazilian dude.

Yesterday I went with Shalane to a punk-rock party. It was the awesome. Everyone was decked out so punkish, it was like I was in SLC Punk! I meant to bring a 40 of steel, but Viejo Liquor had none (!?!), so I got Arrogant Bastard Russian Stout instead -- but it tasted like soy sauce and I only drank half the bottle. d=

Today I had coffee with Mara, who happened to be passing through on her way from causing a ruckus in San Diego back to her home in Los Angeles. Since last mentioned here, Mara has graduated with a bachelors in Art History and landed a sweet swanky job at the Christie's auctioning firm in Los Angeles.

Today I was talking to Kristy on the cordless phone here (since my cell phone is still without a recharger), when the cordless phone died. I called her back on a corded one, but then HER cell phone died.

Year Ago Today: Guatanamo Locker Rooms - Several recent reports of so-called "abuse" at Guatanamo Bay sound pretty silly to me: "One detainee who was believed to be leading the protest threw what an MP said smelled like water from the toilet on him. The MP tried to spray water from a hose in response, but the detainee blocked it with a mat. The guard who tried to spray the detainee was charged with assault, given a reduction in rank to private first class, which was suspended, and reassigned to other duties at Guantanamo." Another is demoting for cursing at an inmate, & watchdog groups are outraged that it (the cursing) wasn't reported up the chain of command.

My friend's page has recently begun displaying a bit weirdly. The grey background is new but not bad, however for some reason comments are now listed above entries instead of below them. Investigating this matter, I discovered that my account had been changed to the infamous S2 format. This means that TAGS work now for this livejournal. Fortunately I've been dutifully tagging entries since the option became available, however as of now only about 40% of the entries created previous to tagging have been tagged. Overall I'm glad the S2 format has been made available with the general appearance of the old one ... just wish the tag view page didn't look so ugly (and I tihnk its only displaying the most recent 20 entries with the specified tag or something).

Addendum: Adventures of the Kitten Patrol!!
Around about 1:30am Kristy's roommate Chrissy came home and reported that she'd just seen a limping kitten near Olson Twin Hall. Kristy & I of course sprang into action and headed to the scene in her kittenmobile.
I think we both thought our odds of actually finding the kitten were pretty low but we persevered and lo we found the kitten. Unfortunately, however, he was fast like fire and eluded us. He did however, look well enough nourished, so we concluded he could take care of himself and broke off the pursuit.
On the way home we encountered yet another kitty. A siamese cat was batting at a plastic bag that was wrapped around a pole by the side of the road. We stopped and investigated. Cat appeared to be in good condition and with a collar, so the kitten patrol called it a night and returned to home base.

Random Fact of the Day:   Wikipedia recently brought my attention to the fact that the New York case Stambovsky v. Ackley, 169 A.D.2d 254 (NY App. Div. 1991) found a house to be legally haunted, thus making it the only legally haunted house in the United States (& probably the world).

Three Years Ago Last Sunday: Interviewing for Chief Justice Position - I interview for the position of Chief Justice of the ASUCD Supreme Court. Justice Bernstein also interviewed for the position, but of course I got it. I subsequently had Justice Bernstein removed. Additionally a "peace activist" attacked a College Republican at a peace rally -- while Fitzmorris was using a video camera. (Bernstein's removal was unrelated to his aspirations for the Office of Chief Justice)
Three Years Ago Last Monday: The Chief Justiceship - I'm confirmed as the ASUCD Chief Justice, just in time to swear Sara Henry & Kalen Gallagher into office. Adrian confirms he's going to live with me the following year, he would turn out to be an awesome flatmate. Was trying to get Don as a flatmate but that didn't pan out. Also, hung out with Sharon1.
Three Years Ago Yesterday (Last Tuesday): The Undersproul - My friend Kat Isaacson shows up at a party at Chris Mays' place. Also I discover a treasure map indicating that there are tunnels under Olson/Sproul halls. Eventually I would make it into these tunnels. Also a certain girl continues to give completely mixed signals. It would have been much more preferable if she had simply said she wasn't interested instead of agreeing to dates and then coming up with extremely plausible reasons to cancel them. As a result our former friendship was destroyed & we've barely talked since.

I think I forgot to mention it, but Bailey, our favourite kitten, played a saucy prank on Kristy the other day -- He turned her screen upside down!
Apparently the Dell Inspiron 6000 laptops Kristy & I both have have an option to rotate everything displayed 180 degrees. The primary purpose for such an option presumably is playing pranks on computer owners who are unaware of this.1
Personally I think Bailey actually whupped out a screwdriver while we were gone and manually rotated the monitor, he's such a crafty little scamp!

Yesterday we had the hearing for Case 32, Nanakul v. SGAO (the mysterious missing Student Bill of Rights). It was less exciting than usual, since Justice Judy "I like to try to make counsel cry" Reed was flooded in down in Vacaville ("I have been up since 0400 moving livestock to higher ground" wtf Justice Reed?). Fortunately we made quorum without her and Justice Joe "Dissenting" Harney. As the rest of us were leaving after we'd finished deliberating for the evening we accidently stumbled upon a secret meeting, but they cleverly swore us to secrecy thus thwarting exposure.

We decided in our opinion we are going to appear to favour one side on the first page, the other on the second2, and then for the ultimate twist we are actually going to attach the missing Bill of Rights to end of the brief. Just you watch.

I had my "second pass" the other day as well. The way this works is one can sign up for 12 units during first pass (but not upper division classes in impacted majors if you are not that major, so I for example couldn't sign up for any of the upper div Communication classes I needed first pass), and then up to 19 units second pass (which, since classes are usually 4 units, often results in an anticlimatic one more class). Then somewhere along the way they ease up and let you add up to 24 or something if you are feeling sadistic.
I am now signed up for: HIS111C (Rome from its earliest history until 476AD), HIS121A (European history from 476AD until the 8th Century), CMN136 (Organizational Communications), and CMN1 (Intro to Public Speaking -- I wanted to take it with the legendary Professor Duax, but he's no longer teaching do to some kind of departmental drama). These classes will complete my minor in History. Additionally I already have a minor in Political Science and major in International Relations completed. I will need one more class for a minor in communications, and in order to graduate I will need to learn how to brew beer.3
At the moment I have 191 units -- next quarter's classes would bring me up to 207. I will need to petition to take up to 225, but I'm told they really just want to make sure you have some kind of plan -- mine being to take those two remaining classes. If I take 12 units in Fall (those two + another class to keep me at full time status), I'll then be at 219. I will then formally integrate my transcripts from UCI & UCLA, which will bring my unit total to 239, thus giving the registrar's office a heart attack.

This Week in International Jurisprudence: The International Court of Justice begins hearings on Bosnia / Herzegovina v. Serbia & Montenegro, in which Bosnia alleges that the state of Serbia/Montenegro has committed genocide against it.

Random Fact of the Day: "Vesna Vulović, a flight attendant from Yugoslavia, survived a fall from 10,160 m (33,330 ft) when the DC-9 airplane she was traveling in blew up over Srbská Kamenice, Czechoslovakia, on January 26, 1972." -Wikipedia.

1 Actually, as Chris "I Hate KDVS" McKenzie, who helped us figure it all out, explained, its because fancy shmancy computers for which its useful to turn the whole screen around use the same software.
2This may be a complete lie.4
3For the science breadth requirement I need to take three science classes - I've taken winemaking and nuclear physics already.
4Don't think I won't attach the missing Bill of Rights though.

SO Now I'm a Cook at IHOP - The day before I had been a cashier at the COHO. I went in to inquire about a job: "do you have any experience as a cook?" "no" "can you start in ten minutes?" "I guess" "good, shave off the muttonchops." And so I shaved off my 18th century stylings in the IHOP restroom. Also this day: Self Entangling Deceitful Webs

Three Years Ago Last Sunday: IHOP Opens - Vanessa Quits - Vanessa quits after the first day of normal operations at IHOP, sending me into terror and alarm since she's a better cook than me and I hadn't worked yet on this first day. Also, people are circulating a petition against racist vandalism -- I remark on how totally moronic this is and the discouraging implications it has on the psychological conditions of the petitioners. Also it came "to my attention today that this upcoming weekend's Model UN conference actually starts on Thursday" -- the same can be said of me five minutes ago (see below)
Three Years Ago Today: UCBMUNC 2003 - Halfway through the UC Berkeley MUN Conference (so only read down to Saturday). Hung out with my friend Sally Lorenz whom I'd met at a conference the quarter before (one will recall I chaired with her at two conferences last quarter as well), & met her friend Mara Stringfield (whom I will be chairing with at the AMPAC conference this year). While hanging out with Mara, Paul Amnapayout decided to ask her if she was "planning to get with [me] ... because if you are I think you should know Kris is awesome," but I'd walked away at around the elipses. Fortunately, however, this has givin me something to recount in all future "what was your most embarressing moment?" ice breakers. Also on this day I defied all rules of probability by completely randomly running into my former best friend Alberto in San Francisco. This brief conversation was the last time I've seen or communicated with him.
Two Years Ago Yesterday Today: Pigtails / Ponytails - (Leap Year) "Courtesy of dictionary.com: Pigtail - A plait of braided hair; Ponytail - A hairstyle in which the hair is held back so as to hang down like a pony's tail." Apparently some disagree. "But nothing's hotter than kristy with her hair in two buns atop her head." (Double true!)

Year Ago Today: War on Wrong: Escalation in MUN - RECENTLY DECLASSIFIED: It turns out the officers of UCDMUN secretly hated their "friend" and associate Under-Secretary-General Gena Rinaldi. Gena resigns, admits that the previous election had probably been fixed and divulges that the Secretariat had tried to expel me from the club.

Apparently: This upcoming weekend's Model UN conference actually starts on Thursday, ie tomorrow. So it looks like tomorrow at 10am I'm shipping out for Los Angeles.
