As you may recall I've been covering the Darfur situation in this blog a bit.
Anyway, the United Nations Special Envoy to Sudan, Dutch diplomat Jan Pronk has been expelled by the Sudanese government ... for blogging about the Darfur conflict!
"It is not his right to comment," says the Sudanese Minister of Foreign Affairs. A BBC correspondant reports that Mr Pronk's blog "has got him into trouble before, and he has ignored requests from within the UN to stop writing on it."
The specific quote that has caused this diplomatic crisis: "The morale in the government army in north Darfur has gone down - some generals have been sacked; soldiers have refused to fight" (Oct 14th) (source: BBC)

Such sauce! Clearly, Mr Pronk needs to discover the art of friends-only entries!

I had to go with the ellipse here because Kristy saucily dangled her foot in front of me when the picture took. Bailey is wearing a shirt because he had a skin fungus on his back he kept licking ... at first he was bothered by the shirt but soon he got used to it and would stroll around like it wasn't there.

I'll do a more thorough update on what I've been up to later, but for now, we have this.

Internet in my apartment here went out sometime Thursday morning, and then I was on the road and then our hotel didn't have free internet access so I basically went from Wednesday until tonight (Sunday night) without internet access. I don't know how I survived!

Driving down to OC I have the gas situation figured out: I fill up right at the station right next to the 113 and then again when I get to Gorman 325 miles later. Returning, however, is a different story. The nearest diesel that I know of anywhere near my house in Mission Viejo in a northwar direction is at the very tedious intersection of El Toro & the freeway, so I like to avoid that if I can. However, travelling further north there are no diesel gas stations until Gorman which are easy to find or known to me.
To make matters more exciting, my gas gauge does not work below the halfway point. The low-gas warning light does work, so I know I really need gas but not how far I can go before I'm stranded.

So on the way back up today, my warning light came on as I was driving through Los Angeles. I held out for awhile hoping to see a gas station with a diesel sign from the freeway, and then at least a gas station. Finally I got desperate and got off in the general area of the centre of this map (looks like Glendale, CA, part of LA). I found a gas station, but it didn't have diesel. The attendant gave me some confusing directions about going under a bridge and I followed them as best I could and came to this ghetto looking gas station with a diesel pump. Unfortunately however, I soon learned that they were out of diesel. The attendant told me gas was at "the other station." "other station?" "next building over ::Gestures next door::" I look outside, knowing there's not a gas station right beside this one. "down the street you mean?" "yeah!" ... weirdo.
Anyway down the street I find another even dodgier looking station with a diesel pump. Once again, the pump ain't pumping anything. Turns out that that pump is broken though and I move to a different pump. Now I'm several turns away from the freeway and my hands are filthy trying to operate the broken pump. )=

Light lit up again several hours later in Ceres, just south of Modesto. Once again I held out for an obvious diesel station until I was getting desperate. Seeing a Valero sign from the road I get off to investigate. No diesel, and the attendant has no idea where the nearest is. Back on the freeway and a few more exits I see another gas station. There's one that does have diesel, but its closed down for the night. I go into the one beside it and ask where the nearest diesel is. Attendants speculate that they think this one does thats four blocks down the road (away from the freeway).
Arriving there, they do not have diesel. Lady gives me barely intelligible directions to another gas station even further in a different direction. This station finally has diesel (but not a working restroom!).
At this point I'm in some obscure corner of Ceres. Fortunately I'd been to Ceres once before, and since I actually do have a photographic memory for directions I was able to find this hidden freeway onramp I never would have found otherwise.

And then I get back to Davis, completing my 500 mile return journey, and there is some bozo in a white pick-up truck parked in my spot! )=<

Davis, CA - Could there be a Slovak conspiracy in ASUCD? Consider the striking resemblence between the flag on the right (the flag of Slovakia), and the flag on the left, (the ASUCD Christian Democrat Party)!

When approached for comment, Christian Democrat leader Subcommandant Ostrowski noted that he was sure "presiel som veverichkoo" could be a good slogan.
"First the destruction of Czechoslovakia, now ASUCD!!" bemoaned ASUCD Director of External Affairs, James Schwab, when approached on the subject.
Emosnail correspondants (seen here standing on top of a tank in Slovakia*) report that "presiel som veverichkoo" is Slovak for "I just ran over a squirrel."

Emosnail's main Slovak correspondant, Branislav Ciberej, could not be reached for comment, but he is probably making an extensive report on the subject in this video.

Balancing the Force in ASUCD
Originally, there was Darth Lloyd, whose dark intentions for ASUCD were clearly evident. Somehow he even managed to finagle his way onto the liberal Lead party despite being an obvious republican. Darth Lloyd brought us his apprentices, Justice Raff, who wasn't quite evil enough, and then Darth Laabs. In fact, the exact moment Laabs crossed over to the Dark Side has been documented.
"I learned a lot from him. I learned about the power of the bylaws, and his knowledge of the bylaws was strong. However, he was dispatched ... to Berkeley, where they have cookies that make people have feelings of dread," related Laabs on the subject of Lloyd.
More recently, after being deposed from the self-proclaimed position of ASUCD Pope, and left for politically dead, Darth Harms has reemerged as a new member of hte ASUCD sith by several accounts. Laabs reports "his current plans involve more duct tape, and I believe, the popeship of SGAO." Harms rolemodel in ASUCD however, Comptroller Kai "Cromwell" Savaree-Ruess has not generally had the Sith title applied to him.
And finally, most recently, Ostrowski of the Slovak Christian party has declared his sithship. This brings currently identified ASUCD sith to 3. Ostrowski speculated that are are probably actually about five, noting that there are both liberal and conservative ones. Though many assume there can only be two Sith present at a time, Sith expert Sean Wallitch informs us that there in fact can be many, vying with eachother for power.
Ostrowski reports that since he thinks a sith name should describe the person, he is going to take on the sith name of "Darth Steve."
When asked to speculate as to who else might be Sith, both "Darth Steve" & Darth Laabs noted that Senator Molnar, whose ascension to the Senate was regarded with tremendous dread a year ago, has turned out to be "too good natured." Savaree-Ruess's name was mentioned but "he just hangs out with Chris Harold all the time" according to Ostrowski.

Things slowed down a little bit last week, I think all the bees were fried from the heat. One morning (Thursday?) five of us (all technicians except Bobby) turned up to do a relatively simple removal in Mission Viejo. It was kind of funny to see all four trucks on one job.
There are different levels of state liscense for pest controllers, from lowest to highest: Applicator, Field Representative, & Operator. I'm told normally the field representative runs the company and the operator almost never leaves HQ. On this job we had two Operators and two Field Representatives.
Then we all went to the restaurant Coco's & office Amy met us there, and Dave treated us all to breakfast. It was excellent.

The next day (Friday?) the first job on the schedule for Dave & Ryan the Elder was a fishing trip on Dave's 16ft boat in the ocean.

Office Megan, soon to be on "Real Desperate Housewives of OC" as a daughter (shooting starts tomorrow) got a second speeding ticket in so many days in Coto de Caza. This time the officer wrote her up for her windows being too tinted and not having her liscense plate on (and thus being able to use the tollway for free) .. I think he was pissed once he ran her through the computer and realized she'd gotten a speeding ticket the day before.

On Saturday evening my friend Nidia, her friends, & myself convoyed down to this party way down in Vista, CA, in three cars. Aaron met us there, as he'd been in San Diego that day.

Today, I give you three pictures... three mondo pictures outside an lj cut!!! Because its just that momentous an occasion. In the picture above, you can see Kristy ([livejournal.com profile] basicallyasap) doin a little dance as she crosses the stage to graduate.

After graduation her family and I went to this fancy little Italian restaurant in nearby Napa Valley for lunch. It was extremely delicious. Then we went to the Mondavi winery. Now, Kristy & I had assumed wine baron Robert Mondavi graduated from Davis, since he buys our school expensive presents like the Mondavi Center, & the Mondavi Institute, but it turns out he actually graduated from Stanford. And in the gallery of stuff about Mondavi at his winery, there aren't any references to the expensive edifices he's built at Davis -- clearly he is having a secret affair with Davis that he doesn't want Stanford to find out about.

Anyway, this next picture from the winery I have selected because it gives a good view of Kristy's adorable mortarboard with polkadots & kitten ears:

Anyway, Thursday night Kristy & I went to a party her friend Candice was having. Unfortunately it appears the shutter on my camera wasn't opening properly so I have no pictures of drunken debauchery from that event to share with you )= I must say though the highlight, what made it stand out from other parties, was that they were barbequeing chicken and it was delicious.
Friday night I just soaked in the fact that I finally didn't have to stress about anything anymore. Spent the evening leisurely reading about 5th Century history without pressure, and played the "Fall of Rome" Civilization III scenario a bit as the Visigoths.
Tonight Kristy's best friend Sashie is having a party, so there will of course be drunken debauchery. I will be dutifully embedded on the front lines of this adventure, just to report for you, the blogosphere!

And here is one more picture for you, Bailey getting into the spirit of graduation.
This is actually from Ben's graduation last December, but I never got around to doing anything with it.

Entry of the Day: Goes to Heather ([livejournal.com profile] emd), mainly because she's heroically returned from the hospital and rejoined the blog-melee asap! Truly a hero to be emulated. Also, she posted a poll, and who doesn't love filling out lj polls, seriously.
Random Picture of the Day: Oftentimes I like to check to see what flickr says the "most interesting" picture of a given tag is. Today I happened to check "graduation," of which over 165,000 pictures were tagged, and the most interesting picture I thought was pretty cool.. so much so that I decided to insert this blurb here to link to it: "Excelsior"

Still Working on a Paper - A hellish torture indeed.
Two Years Ago Today: 2 & 3 of 30 - Blogology II & III - I get off to a running start with my insane 30 in 14 quest with two entries about the very nature of blogging. Some critics, such as my troll-like older brother [livejournal.com profile] nibot would criticize me for being too recursive in this start, but I still think it was a worthwhile discourse. By the time I get to my actual 17th Entry on the 26th, its a concise little entry about how far I am from sanity.
Year Ago Today: 30 in 30 II - 17 - The Dark Side of Driving - On forgotten truths such as that you're supposed to actually drive in the rightmost lane possible rather than cruise in the left, and if you are in the left and there's a slow car in front of you and none to your right, you should not tailgate the car until it takes a hint, but rather you should be travelling in the right lane if its open....

aggienaut: (Bailey)

Alright so tonight I'm writing a paper on St Francis of Assisi. Or more specifically, I am to compare and contrast two movies about him, Brother Sun, Sister Moon (1972), in which he's portrayed as a flaming hippie, and Francesco (1989), in which this apparently famous guy named Mickey Rourke plays him and he's a bit more emo and rolling in the dirt oriented.
Anyway, I really don't mind writing about history, but I hate having to analyze films for a history class. Maybe if I'd signed up for a film class I'd expect this kind of crap, but I didn't. I signed up for a history class, and here I have to write several pages on some crap-ass director in the 70s wanted to portray a 13th century masochist as a hippie.

Anyway, so yeah I'm disgruntled, and in a hurry, so yeah. But by Wednesday I'll be done with finals, so I'll have almost as much free time as [livejournal.com profile] otimus, so y'all better look out.. at least until I die on the 18th.

No more kisses mom!   So for todays little entry, by popular demand, I am going to talk about Bailey. Bailey appears to be mostly an unusual breed called "Australian Mist," causing him to have an aweomse grey-&-black leopard pattern, with a golden belly. [livejournal.com profile] slosha got him at the Woodland animal shelter when he was wee (and sick). But Sloshie's allergic reactions to cats proved too much so his Other Mother Kristy took over Bailey-raising.
Because he was really sick for much of his wee-er weeks, he grew accustomed to being held constantly. As a result, he is much more cuddly than most (and especially male) cats. When one comes home after he's been left alone, he'll frequently mew until you pick him up and hold him for a bit.

Bailey is BFF with Kristy's flatmate Jardine's pet bunny. The bunny was named "Oreo" by Kristy's former flatmate Chrissy, who got him as a gift from some sorority older sib or something. Since Chrissy literally never took care of the bunny, however, it was adopted by Jardine, who just calls him "Mr Buns." Me I call it "Orca," since its patterned like an orca. One thing we can all agree on though is that "Oreo" is a dumb name.
But yeah, Orca & Bailey are best friends. Also, Bailey is fond of lying about on his back. In fact he's doing that right now! He's such a master of loungin.

Bailey likes to wake us up in the morning by licking our faces, something that kittenbehaviour.com (or something like that - I don't have time to check facts here) says is a sign of particular loving.

But he's not all well behaved. He likes to throw fiestas & pool parties. Crap fiestas that is! He gets a little carried away while burying shit in his litter box, and next thing you know he's just watching the litter fly for the fun of it. And then when we are emptying his litter box and have his little gifts all wrapped up in a plastic bag, he likes to bat at it, and we have to say "no bailey, no! NOT a pinata!" And if one leaves the toilet lid up (which is gross anyway people, seriously), he will sometimes decide to throw a pool party in it.

But mostly he's a good kitty, waging war on his eternal enemy, Dots on Walls, sitting in windowsills, and hanging out with his catmom Kristy. He's one of the most loving cats I've ever met.

And now for the only reason half of you read this crap: Entry of the Day Awards: [livejournal.com profile] xaositecte definitely wrote another entry which will be remembered in blog-memory for years to come (at least when I'm reminiscing about past 30 in 30s) - What the various 30 in 30 participants would do with two cows, respectively.

Anyway, last year's conclusion: as far as "abominations to the sanctity of marriage" are concerned, divorce is many times worse than allowing gay marriage; or at the very least, allow seperation if people were dumb and make eachother miserable, but disallow remarriage. Historicity, continued
...Instead, I think I will continue the series on events that took place in the mists of time prior to livejournal. We left off in Sweden in 1998-1999.

So I returned from Sweden, arriving home 11 hours before I had to start summer school in California. The next morning I was sitting in class trying to get used to the fact that everyone was speaking English all around me. Also, while I was there taking classes for the first time, everyone else was there because they'd failed something.. so man was the class dumbed down and filled with dumbtarded people.
Returned to work lifeguarding at Wild Rivers.
Found that my best friend Alberto, who had been thoroughly preppy when I left had redefined himself as a little more edgy and gotten into "death metal" music. Unfortunately he didn't quite realize that some people found this rather scary -- for example when quiet popular girl Melody Diversa went on a date with him and was traumatized because he blasted death metal the whole time they were in his car.
And this of course was just one of many many amusing incidents of girls basically throwing themselves at Alberto and him totally bungling it.

Anyway, one day I'm talking to Alberto online and he admits he's got this crush on this redhead, Oakley, who happens to be my math teacher's daughter. So of course I'm like "Oakley? I know Oakley. She's in my MUN class, and now I'm gonna be her new best friend ;) " And then he probably called me, because he always called me the moment I said something interesting, and then I'd be like "DUDE, can't we just talk online?" and then he's like "Dude!" and... yeah.
Anyway, the next day --which would be Monday the 25th of October, 1999-- around 3:05pm, I run into Oakley by her locker with a friend. So of course I say hi and talk to her a little, and am introduced to her friend, Elena Jordanov.
   To be continued...

So on Thursday afternoon I parked at the end of Oak St --since it is the closest free parking (after five) to the Memorial Union, at a distance of about a furlong)-- to go to Senate & give them the recent case opinion.
I'm taking Intro to Public Speaking right now. People think its tedious to make a speech on some topic of their choosing to 20 or so people in the discussion group? Well try addressing a room full of Senators & other officers on a subject that (A) is kind of tedious to explain, & (B) is something they disagree with. Not that I stressed about it, I'm used to the senate, but it was a bit awkward that I was basically telling a room full of people that they were wrong on several important points.
Anyway, I thought the issue was pretty clear when you got down to it, but some such as former senator Darth Lloyd say "to say that i disagree is an understatement my friend," so I've been meaning to once more try to lay out the issues in easily understandable terms. (see below)

After Senate I was to play intertube waterpolo with Lyrakeet & others, so I left as local legislation enthusiast Brent Laabs was giving a presentation about why we should secede from the union University of California Student Association (UCSA) ("Their charter says 'Student Association,' but their webpage and a number of other documents say 'students association' -- it appears they don't even know their own name").
Next I needed to get my swimtrunks which I thought were at Kristy's place in The Colleges, about four furlongs across campus -- I could drive there to have my car with me, but since there's only ten "guest" spots for the several hundred people that live there, the odds of getting one are slim and the closest free parking spot would probably still be Oak. So I walked over there.
Only, they weren't there! I was supposed to be at the pool in fifteen minutes, yet I was half a mile from my car and it was hot and I wear wearing a suit & tie! )=
Lyric & Kim picked me up and we made a mad dash to my place for my togs and back to the pool.... but the other team hadn't shown up anyway so it was all for nothing.

Friday morning I toured McGeorge Law School with Φ A Δ, and then that evening Kritsy & I went to see the Yeah Yeah Yeahs at The Warfield in SF.
I'd never been to the Warfield before. It was pretty awesome. Looked like an Opera-house or something. Kitten-princess & I were only four rows back from the front of the balcony, which means we had an excellent view -- though Krispy Kritter would have liked to prance about on the floor.

This morning I took a mock LSAT over at the UCD law school (BTW, I mentioned a bit ago that Sara Henry was running for president of the Law Student Assn -- well she lost). Before and after this I made an appearance at the dry run Davis MUN was doing for the upcoming conference we put on here. I started to take the "UberCAT" test (CAT = Chair Aptitude Test, but really it was megalomaniacally backronymed to be named after SG Catherine, who created them)to test out of chair training but then I had to leave for the Mock LSAT.

Van Schoelandt v. ASUCD Senate
Since its long and tedious to explain it in any more understandable terms than it already is in the opinion, I think I might address specific parts of the case in different entries. For now, an outline of the arguments:
Of course the case regards a closed session that occured on 01/12/06 in the midst of a constitutional crisis. No reason for the closed session was announced, but after it was over the Senate had a Bill written to retroactively change the requirements for Senate office. The codes state that notification in various forms is to be given for closed sessions, and that these sessions can only be called for specificly listed reasons.
(1) Defence asserts the session was called as a "personnel matter." Does it fulfill the requirements for a personnel session?: (A) can a personnel closed session be called "in general" about nothing (and no one) specific? (B) Can Senators-elect be considered subject personnel? (Can the outcome of an election be considered a "Personnel Matter?")
(2) (A) Can a personnel closed session be called on people without their knowledge? (B) Can a personnel closed session be called without notifying the public?
(3) How can this situation be remedied in light of the potential privacy concerns of hypothetical subject parties who may hypothetically have been discussed?

Once you are familiar with the discussion of these subjects, I believe you, like me, will be completely at a loss as to on what grounds Lloyd completely disagrees.

I arrive at Court on Friday to find a table there is absolutely heaping with St Patricks Day themed desserts & snacks -- including TWO complete cakes, a set of cupcakes, as well as chips & dip et cetera. Someone remarks "If you want healthy food, its all in criminal division, they have celery & carrots and things." I wonder if the different faire is caused by subtle psychological nuances related to working in criminal versus civil division, or merely a groupthink effect forged by the personalities of people who happen to work in the respective divisions.

On Saturday Kristy & I made an expedition to Roseville and retrieved my Mercedes.
On Sunday I put the car through a trial run .. by driving it the 400+ miles from Davis down to Orange County.

   My internet is acting extremely wonky at the moment. Pages on livejournal & wikipedia are opening fine, but most other pages are not opening at all. Previous to these problems there had been no changes to the set up here since last night when everything was working fine -- except Myspace;
Myspace is also not loading at all now, but yesterday my login would bring me to the "register new user" page. If I typed in an obviously bogus login, it would tell me I had the wrong username/password, and I further confirmed that it was recognizing my login by telling it I forgot my password and verifying that the information it sent back to me was what I was typing in -- so for some reason its recognizing my login as not a nonaccount or incorrect login, but sending me to the register new account screen.
And of course AIM is down. This is all extremely alarming because AIM is the principal way I communicate with people and during my very short stay here its extremely important to me to try to make the most out of my visit and see as many of my friends as I can. Myspace is also important to this goal.. I was able to briefly get through and post a bulletin announcing I'm in town, but otherwise I'm cut off from myspace as well for some reason. )=

Two Years and a Week Ago Yesterday:
Brown Act Ethics - Though the Brown Act does not presume to apply to every little non-governmental organization, the ethical sentiments expressed in it are transferable. The subject of this entry is the explusion of non-officers from executive meetings of Davis MUN. I don't know whether they still do, but I know other organizations also regularly exclude non officers from the officer meetings, and I think you should know that that is probably not ethically defensible.
ALSO: "The idea that career employees may act with impunity to the Court is to accept that they do not work among us at the employ of the ASUCD government but rather supervise an incompetent student play-government. I need hardly point out that the latter precept which is necessary for the argument in favor of their impunity is insulting to anyone that participates in the ASUCD government." After some convincing testimony by Mark Champagne, we concluded that "it is clear that at the time of the original writing of the Judicial Codes, the possibility that this situation could arise was not anticipated. By accident of writing therefore, the Codes could have indicated either way. Despite extreme ambiguity, it appears that the Codes expected Defendants always to be undergraduate students of UC Davis" (Case # 24). HOWEVER, in a terribly constructed sentence, we clarify: "We find not that the ASUCD Supreme Court does not have jurisdiction over university employee union members, but specifically that the codes imply that they cannot act as Defendants in our court system. There is no reason to believe they are exempt from Court Orders that do not impose direct disciplinary action upon them."
Two Years and a Week Ago Today: ASUCD Purchases Firetruck - Jenn de la Vega reports. Two years later the Aggie Pack Firetruck bears no ASUCD logos or other signs of gratitude for ASUCD's gift of the firetruck to Aggie Pack (a non ASUCD unit), nor has it paid ASUCD back any of the promised funds. ALSO, "Would you say this air conditioning is adequate.... or would you say its pretty fuckin weak?" -My Russian Lecturer, Avrom Brown.
Two Years Ago Last Wednesday: SCANDAL SCANDAL - Reportedly, you do not --I repeat NOT-- need a "Number 2" pencil to fill out teacher evaluation forms as official sources would have you believe, but a faculty informant reveals "as long as it is dark enough, a pen would probably suffice"!! Also I deliver SGAO a minor smackdown regarding the nonposting of documents. Two years later Court documents are still not put online by SGAO -- but the Court's determined that the Senate is responsible for overtasking SGAO without giving them enough resources to accomplish everything (Case # 32).
Two Years Ago Last Thursday: Disappearing Aggie Article - RECENTLY DECLASSIFIED: An Aggie article about two ASUCD Supreme Court cases filed against Creative Media mysteriously disappears from the website. Incidently, Creative Media at the time controlled the Aggie website. A reason for the disappearance was never revealed, but now the Aggie doesn't cover ASUCD Court cases at all.

This St Patricks Day, other than the food at work, I forgot about it until my little brother drunkenly called me and asked why I wasn't drinking -- it took me a few minutes to realize why I ought to be drinking at all. I seem to have a history of ambivalence about this day.
Two Years Ago Today: Last Summer in Review - A weird time to finally get around to it. Also, I don't know how I'm going to get to OC for break.

I think I forgot to mention it, but Bailey, our favourite kitten, played a saucy prank on Kristy the other day -- He turned her screen upside down!
Apparently the Dell Inspiron 6000 laptops Kristy & I both have have an option to rotate everything displayed 180 degrees. The primary purpose for such an option presumably is playing pranks on computer owners who are unaware of this.1
Personally I think Bailey actually whupped out a screwdriver while we were gone and manually rotated the monitor, he's such a crafty little scamp!

Yesterday we had the hearing for Case 32, Nanakul v. SGAO (the mysterious missing Student Bill of Rights). It was less exciting than usual, since Justice Judy "I like to try to make counsel cry" Reed was flooded in down in Vacaville ("I have been up since 0400 moving livestock to higher ground" wtf Justice Reed?). Fortunately we made quorum without her and Justice Joe "Dissenting" Harney. As the rest of us were leaving after we'd finished deliberating for the evening we accidently stumbled upon a secret meeting, but they cleverly swore us to secrecy thus thwarting exposure.

We decided in our opinion we are going to appear to favour one side on the first page, the other on the second2, and then for the ultimate twist we are actually going to attach the missing Bill of Rights to end of the brief. Just you watch.

I had my "second pass" the other day as well. The way this works is one can sign up for 12 units during first pass (but not upper division classes in impacted majors if you are not that major, so I for example couldn't sign up for any of the upper div Communication classes I needed first pass), and then up to 19 units second pass (which, since classes are usually 4 units, often results in an anticlimatic one more class). Then somewhere along the way they ease up and let you add up to 24 or something if you are feeling sadistic.
I am now signed up for: HIS111C (Rome from its earliest history until 476AD), HIS121A (European history from 476AD until the 8th Century), CMN136 (Organizational Communications), and CMN1 (Intro to Public Speaking -- I wanted to take it with the legendary Professor Duax, but he's no longer teaching do to some kind of departmental drama). These classes will complete my minor in History. Additionally I already have a minor in Political Science and major in International Relations completed. I will need one more class for a minor in communications, and in order to graduate I will need to learn how to brew beer.3
At the moment I have 191 units -- next quarter's classes would bring me up to 207. I will need to petition to take up to 225, but I'm told they really just want to make sure you have some kind of plan -- mine being to take those two remaining classes. If I take 12 units in Fall (those two + another class to keep me at full time status), I'll then be at 219. I will then formally integrate my transcripts from UCI & UCLA, which will bring my unit total to 239, thus giving the registrar's office a heart attack.

This Week in International Jurisprudence: The International Court of Justice begins hearings on Bosnia / Herzegovina v. Serbia & Montenegro, in which Bosnia alleges that the state of Serbia/Montenegro has committed genocide against it.

Random Fact of the Day: "Vesna Vulović, a flight attendant from Yugoslavia, survived a fall from 10,160 m (33,330 ft) when the DC-9 airplane she was traveling in blew up over Srbská Kamenice, Czechoslovakia, on January 26, 1972." -Wikipedia.

1 Actually, as Chris "I Hate KDVS" McKenzie, who helped us figure it all out, explained, its because fancy shmancy computers for which its useful to turn the whole screen around use the same software.
2This may be a complete lie.4
3For the science breadth requirement I need to take three science classes - I've taken winemaking and nuclear physics already.
4Don't think I won't attach the missing Bill of Rights though.

   Three Years Ago Last Friday:
SO Now I'm a Cook at IHOP - The day before I had been a cashier at the COHO. I went in to inquire about a job: "do you have any experience as a cook?" "no" "can you start in ten minutes?" "I guess" "good, shave off the muttonchops." And so I shaved off my 18th century stylings in the IHOP restroom. Also this day: Self Entangling Deceitful Webs
Three Years Ago Last Friday: The Following Week - ie the week following the previous entry, up to the day both entries are posted. Working at IHOP, barely finding enough time to sleep between school, work, & parties.
Three Years Ago Last Saturday: I'm Only Happy When It Rains - An uneventful day for once. And it rained. Rain is sublime.
Three Years Ago Last Sunday: IHOP Opens - Vanessa Quits - Vanessa quits after the first day of normal operations at IHOP, sending me into terror and alarm since she's a better cook than me and I hadn't worked yet on this first day. Also, people are circulating a petition against racist vandalism -- I remark on how totally moronic this is and the discouraging implications it has on the psychological conditions of the petitioners. Also it came "to my attention today that this upcoming weekend's Model UN conference actually starts on Thursday" -- the same can be said of me five minutes ago (see below)
Three Years Ago Today: UCBMUNC 2003 - Halfway through the UC Berkeley MUN Conference (so only read down to Saturday). Hung out with my friend Sally Lorenz whom I'd met at a conference the quarter before (one will recall I chaired with her at two conferences last quarter as well), & met her friend Mara Stringfield (whom I will be chairing with at the AMPAC conference this year). While hanging out with Mara, Paul Amnapayout decided to ask her if she was "planning to get with [me] ... because if you are I think you should know Kris is awesome," but I'd walked away at around the elipses. Fortunately, however, this has givin me something to recount in all future "what was your most embarressing moment?" ice breakers. Also on this day I defied all rules of probability by completely randomly running into my former best friend Alberto in San Francisco. This brief conversation was the last time I've seen or communicated with him.
Two Years Ago Yesterday Today: Pigtails / Ponytails - (Leap Year) "Courtesy of dictionary.com: Pigtail - A plait of braided hair; Ponytail - A hairstyle in which the hair is held back so as to hang down like a pony's tail." Apparently some disagree. "But nothing's hotter than kristy with her hair in two buns atop her head." (Double true!)
Year Ago Today: Winter Election 2005 - An objective account of the "Disqualification Controversy" regarding the disqualification and subsequent requalification of Rob Roy by the previous Elections Committee.
Year Ago Today: War on Wrong: Escalation in MUN - RECENTLY DECLASSIFIED: It turns out the officers of UCDMUN secretly hated their "friend" and associate Under-Secretary-General Gena Rinaldi. Gena resigns, admits that the previous election had probably been fixed and divulges that the Secretariat had tried to expel me from the club.

Apparently: This upcoming weekend's Model UN conference actually starts on Thursday, ie tomorrow. So it looks like tomorrow at 10am I'm shipping out for Los Angeles.

The Second Annual1 Procrastinator's Choice Award - Fall 2005
This finals week I actually spent a significant amount of time reading about the so-called barbarian tribes which overran the Roman Empire in the 5th Century -- The Goths (Visigoths sacked Rome in 410 AD, Ostrogoths captured all of Italy in 493 AD), Vandals (sacked Rome for two weeks in 455 AD), Huns (despite modern misconceptions, have absolutely no relation to modern Germans or the geographic area of modern Germany), Alans (started out north-east of the Black Sea, ended up migrating down through Spain and setting up a kingdom in North Africa with the Vandals), etc. It has always fascinated me how history normally treats these civilizations like non-people with non-governments -- who just happen to appear out of nowhere when they trouble a more noteworthy civilization. The idea of the collapse of the Roman Empire is intriguing as well: an empire thought to be the be all end all of civilization, what was it like to experience its collapse?
So yeah, I spent time studying these people when I had no reason to, and in fact should have been doing other things. I think one of my major regrets with college is that I never took any classes relating to this period, despite the fact that its fascinated me all my life (from elementry school till I got excited about diplomacy in 9th grade I wanted to become an archeologist).
My other regret is that I didn't manage to go abroad )=

Anyway, in other finals week procrastination news: last Fall quarter finals week I entertained myself by watching the epic drama fly between SaulSugarman and others on the Daviswiki. This finals week I did not pay attention at all as an epic battle raged on Daviswiki between SaulSugarman and others on Daviswiki. In fact I just recently became aware of it and haven't had the appetite to try to scrutinize whats going on, but it appears Saul is trying to say that Ikea is the incarnation of evil. What caught my attention was the unusual comment "Dude, your ass must be SORE after pulling so much untruth out of it." which someone had made to Saul regarding his facts.

Kitten-Themed Photo Essay of the Day

Bailey and I drove down back down to OC today.

a few more )

Bailey seriously sat on my shoulder like that 98% of the trip. He was amazingly well-behaved. Originally I was afraid it would be tedious driving down with mr catface, but in the future I think I'd rather have him keeping me company for the drive than not. We're like, Best Friends Forever now.

Final Throes - I need a ride back to OC after finals week ends. Also I have $3.77 in my bank account. I've really moved up in the world since then: a year later I'm driving my mercedes home with my awesome co-pilot and I totally have like $100 in my bank account.
04-12-13: The UCD Nuremburg Trials - The then-members of the ASUCD Elections Committee are tried before the Campus Judicial Board and utterly destroyed by the arguments of the Orwellian candidates. The Orwellian plaintiffs are now the Elections Committee.
Year Ago Last Thursday: Shoot the Moon - Police respond to calls regarding a suspicious individual on campus. Arriving on the scene, they are shot at by the individual in question, return fire. Suspect dies on the scene with ten gunshot wounds, no officers are harmed. This is the first shooting death at UC Davis. This is the first officer related death at UC Davis. At the time it wasn't clear what caused the incident. It appears the Aggie wrote a follow-up article on it, but because the Aggie changed servers and broke all their links, it would take some searching to find.
ALSO, an artistic rendering of the previous day's elections committee trial, and an anonymous poster gives me the crushing advice to "get a life." I think I'm still recovering from that one. ALSO, pictures from my trip down to UCLA.

Year Ago Last Sunday: Procrastinatory Morass - The aforementioned Procrastinator's Choice Awards 2004 -- Awarded to Daviswiki.org. Also, we review some historic murdurous violence that occured in Davis, and in conjunction with others placed a $6 reward for anyone that can determine which campus restroom was the site of a violent murder. This reward was later nullified by another editor who thought it in poor taste, and we didn't push the issue. I'd still give $6 to know though.
   Year Ago Today: Breaking News:
      (1) Eric Sanchez Announced as New ASUCD Advisor - Chosen by an expert panel of Student Focus and SS members (+ token Leadite member Adam Barr), he'd last appx 2/3rds of a year. After a short time of trouble, new ASUCD Advisor Michael Tucker now advises a Senate with only a small focite minority.
      (2) On the Deleterious Behaviour of the Elections Committee - The official opinions of the Campus Judicial Board are publicized via Emosnail. They had earlier been posted on the wall on the Third Floor but were almost immediately removed by some unknown individual. See also, a funny comment string to the entry.

Measuring X

Nov. 8th, 2005 10:22 am
aggienaut: (asucd)

It was raining yesterday. It was pretty cold and wet but I was kind of hoping it would rain again today. It was raining two years ago today, when I asked Kristy out down on Telegraph in Berkeley.

Today is also voting day for the Yolo County special election, as a Yes on X supporter helpfully illegally* reminded me via telephone last night.
At this moment I know next to nothing about anything on the ballot other than Measure X, but I plan on educating myself on the other topics before voting later today. Measure X campaigning has been omnipresent for the last month or two, but its hard to sort through the bombardment of information on the subject and people's ulterior motives. Anyway I thought I'd share with you all the results of my analysis of the subject. There were several assumptions I had in mind when I began, these were: (1) that the City of Davis is currently ridiculously anti-growth; (2) the City needs to stop blocking Trader Joes from coming to town asap (incidently, not knowing the assumptions other people had when they first looked at this issue is the primary factor in me distrusting their opinions on the matter). Otherwise I was completely objective in my analysis.
Measure X essentially extends the city limits to include the land which developers want to use to create Covell Village (ie Measure X essentially is a yes or no on Covell Village). Yes it might be a pleasant place to live if you're into that kind of thing but I'm gonna skip the fluff and get to my critical conclusions.
   (1) The least expensive housing unit created will be $538,000, with the average being $683,945. City analysts have determined that a "middle income" family cannot afford housing over $387,000. What this means is that students certainly won't be able to afford the housing, and furthermore prices city-wide will likely rise with the influx of more affluent persons. As we're not creating pile of new high income jobs around here, I'm assuming this is housing for commuters from Sacremento 11 miles away. Lets not make Davis a commuter suburb.
   (2) I've been pushing for a Trader Joes around here for awhile. I think its ridiculous that the city can even prevent an enterprise from situating itself in this town. The principal objection in the past has been that Trader Joes would put The Nugget or the Food Coop out of business. Covell Village proposes putting a Trader Joes right across the street from the Nugget. Smart one there. The Trader Joes in the package is the principal part of the deal Do X proponents use to appeal to students I think (other than free pizza coupons for support), but according to No on X people, the City is ALREADY in discussion with Trader Joes about two other locations. The retail portion of Covell Village wouldn't go up until 2009, but Trader Joes could begin moving into one of the other two locations much sooner, so the Covell Village Trader Joes claim is actually the opposite of true.
   (3) All Covell Village traffic will go out on Covell st, and apparently the planners did not make any plans to mitigate the congestion this will cause. The city Environmental Impact Report (EIR) estimates it will double traffic on Covell, producing Grade "F" traffic, with "conditions intolerable for most drivers." (!) If we're going to expand, there's no hurry, lets do it intelligently and actually plan ahead. If the traffic was a minor change I wouldn't even count it here, but from the looks of it, its going to be ridiculous, so its what really breaks the plan for me. Local green party officer Mike Siminitus had an interesting outlook on this: "I don't expect people to be driving much by 2009 anyway."
So there you have it, having analysed the proposal with no ulterior motives or assumptions other than those listed, I have firmly concluded to urge one to vote No on X.

I did my best to ignore the apparent inability of Yes on X supporters not to break laws and elections regulations (Two Pollworkers Found to be Publicly Pro X, Yes on X Supporters Accused of Illegal Campaigning) but it does make me suspicious that there must be strong ulterior motives to cause these people (predominantly developers and other bourgousie) to break so many regulations.
I find it amusing that none other than the ASUCD Elections Chair, Jonathon Leathers, filed a case with the Yolo County District Attorney against Yes on X campaign violations. In the Aggie article they strangely didn't mention that he's the ASUCD Elections Chair, but I think its a good sign that our Elections Chair is actually attentive to electoral legal issues for once. Then again, in an ironic twist of fate, the current elections committee is made up entirely of the people who pwned the last elections committee over electoral misconduct last year.

Feel free to tell me your thoughts on the other ballot measures, especially the obscure ones like school board and less talked about propositions. Also I need to write No on X two more times so there'll be the same number of bolded No on X's as their opponents in this entry.

*It is illegal to solicit someone on a cell phone, and makes me very angry when someone does. This caller was lucky they got my voicemail.

Picture of the Day

Kristy has a kitten now!! Sashie got it this weekend, but has an allergic reaction so unfortunately could not keep the kitten. Fortunately however, Kristy kindly volunteered to take the kitten off her hands. We have named him Bailey.

Secret of Lost Legislation II - RECENTLY DECLASSIFIED: While bored during a Senate meeting at which creating training sessions for ASUCD officers was being discussed, Justice Raff and I flip through the Government Codes and find that it is already mandated that there are to be three training sessions per year. Usually only one occurs per year, this year Comptroller Whitney gunned that one so there will be none. Coupled with the fact that until now there wasn't an ASUCD Advisor this year, training among ASUCD officials will be at an all time low this year. Maybe this will mean more cases for me. ALSO, I noted th section of the government codes which is most frequently forgotten by our Senators, and so I'll repeat it: Section 701 - (1) In any instances where there might be a conflict, the name or symbol [of ASUCD] will not be used. (2) ASUCD, Unit of ASUCD, or symbols of ASUCD cannot be used in any way that might be construed as implying support, endorsement, or advancement of, or opposition to, any political, religious, sociological, or economic movement, activity, or program by the Assocated Students of the University of California, Davis (ASUCD)."
04-10-31: Plain White T's Show - Kristy and I go to San Francisco to see The Plain White T's at The Pound. Also, an interesting look at the two major campus political parties.
04-11-01: Halloween 2004 - Went to a party at the Pirate House, as a Soviet officer (again, for the first time). Best costume award for 2004 goes to someone who was a tetris piece.
Year Ago Last Thursday Today: Swords and Sandals Unveilled - RECENTLY DECLASSIFIED: the entry that started it all. I believe I can attribute to this entry for causing a Daviswiki investigation and eventually an Aggie article on Swords & Sandals. I had previously heard rumours about the secret organization but I never really believed it until the events leading up to this entry. I'd rate this entry as a must-read for followers of our campus politics. ALSO, Bush is reelected.
Year Ago Today: One Year Later - Kristy and I go down to Berkeley to celebrate our one-year anniversery
Two Year Ago Today: - Miss Kristy Heidenberger became my girlfriend.
