At work today I've been looking for a local Earth Day Festival for the Orange County Beekeepers Assn to set up a booth. So I've been googling city names plus "Earth Day." What comes up for Mission Viejo, my own city, as the first result?

...

Apparently, after Earth Day last year, the city dumped all their "Be a Green Machine" signs, and other Earth Day paraphernalia, in city greenspace!!

   Oh Mission Viejo.

Incidentally everything in a beehive is biodegradable except for some metal wiring and nails

On Wednesday I open up our paper to find that a body has been found in a McDonalds parking lot in South Davis.

On Thursday I open up the paper to find that a body has been found in a janitorial closet in Sproul Hall.

This second body was found hanging from a rope, but police characterizedd it as "unintended" and did not suspect foul play. He was... rooting about for spare lightbulbs and had a very unfortunate accident? See also.

Freezing Season is at Hand
In less morbid news, this morning I was extremely reluctant to get out of bed on account of it being freezing here. When I finally managed to do so around 9am, I enter the living room to find my flatmate Jason has opened every window!! W.T.F. They were closed when I went to bed. How could he have possibly gotten too hot before 9am?
Additionally, it being a new month, rent is of course due. I asked him to write me a check last night, so I could pay the rent today since I usually don't see him during the day. There's definitely no check to be found this morning. )= (I was too tired last night to deal with compelling him to write one then and there)

"To advance the Christian agenda in the ASUCD government with the eventual control of the Senate, Executive, Courts, and committees."

"To expose the hypocrisy of anti-Christian elements on campus."

"The Christian Slate should reflect a Christian view and so I propose that the Christian Slate be at all times 77% Christian or higher. This is the 2001 Christian percentage for the United States. The current level is 87% Christian. This will affect invites and approval of members when the group is closed."

First two quotes taken from the Christian Slate Daviswiki page, third one a messege from the founder in their Thefacebook group. They also have a Myspace group. The Thefacebook group boasts 151 members at this time.

Simply put, I think this is quite possibly the most creepy thing I've ever seen in ASUCD.

Will the rule of law triumph over religion, or will religion intercept the proverbial gavel between the hand that holds it and the head?

In Other News: "Court Rules in Favour of County on Conaway Ranch." Basically the County is trying to use eminent domain to acquire Conaway Ranch from the group of private owners, The Conaway Preservation Group. "Groups on both sides of the debate claim they do not wish the surface water on the land to be sold to Southern California developers or surrounding counties." Ostensivly they're fighting for the same thing, and I really don't know which side to believe ... though I'm rather suspicious of the County. I really appreciate how the Aggie article (source of quotes used here) refers to "the Court" throughout without specifying which Court -- oh wait no I don't: badaggie badaggie [said as if admonishing a bad kitten]. I believe they're referring to a decision of the Third District California Court of Appeals. Also "The county claims the land is worth the approximately $60 million that was paid when the Conway Preservation Group purchased the land in 2005. The Conway Preservation Group, however, claims the land is worth several million dollars" ... is 60 million not "several million?"

So recently apparently two individuals entered the North Davis Safeway and brandished handgun(s?). "According to the police report, the suspects walked into the store and asked for tomatoes. They then entered the employee-only area and requested lettuce. Police reported that the two then stole miscellaneous groceries and alcohol. The suspects left the store and jumped into a car while one of them flashed a gun." (Aggie Article). WTF?!

Awhile ago there were a string of bank robberies in Davis. In one (which I think was unrelated to the others, it was just kinda a fad), the police report noted that the culprit did not show any weapons or make any threats. So what did he do? I'm picturing him inadvertantly robbing the bank due to asking for more money than was in his account or something.

In other news, apparently the UC Regents have finally been persuaded to divest from Sudan, in protest of the violence there. I would like to note that this is retarded.
The basic cause of the violence is the dysfunctional government. Studies show that democracy generally doesn't stick in countries with a per capita GDP of less than $5,000 per annum. In general, development is the key to having a more stable government. Increasing investment in underdeveloped countries is the big picture goal of the international community in helping them.
And.... we're taking away our investment in protest of the government's abuses???! Divestment hurts the people of Sudan much more than it sends any kind of messege. Really, the leadership of Sudan could give a rats ass if the University of California doesn't like them. All we're doing is taking a small step in the totally retardedly wrong direction. In conclusion, you all (divestmentmongers) make me sick. (related)

Today I attended the swearing-in of a new Yolo County Superior Court judge. The former county counsel is now Judge Basha - I hope he doesn't get the Conaway case...
