So for over a decade I've been saying I just don't understand twitter. I had a twitter account and occasionally I'd try to make use of it but I didn't see the point at all. I'd followed a bunch of people I knew, organizations I was involved with, or bee related things, and none of the posts were very interesting and whenever I tweeted something I'd get no kind of interactions at all with my post. Or I tried running a twitter account for the company I worked for in California and would try to post humorous takes on whatever was trending, with plenty of hashtags, that's what you're supposed to do right? Still nothing.

When Russia invaded Ukraine last February started following some accounts that seemed to have more timely and accurate news updates than the major news channels. I found this so reliable and useful I was quickly drawn in to checking twitter multiple times an hour for the latest. Gradually I followed more accounts that the accounts I was already following were frequently referencing.
As the months went by I picked up a few interesting ones updating on the cases against Trump, and then even some that were just posting about art, and several posting about history. I frequently retweet things mainly just so I can find them again later myself. I think occasionally even others have liked or retweeted my posts but I barely pay attention to that now. (you can follow me btw at https://twitter.com/arrrghonaut )

When it was first announced that Elon Musk was actually going to go through with it and buy twitter it wasn't inevitable that I'd be upset or want to throw in the towel, who knows maybe he'd do an alright job and I don't care who's running it.
However immediately, from the day he took over, my twitter feed has ceased to be a fascinating mix of Ukraine news and other things I find intriguing, but a morass of uninteresting stuff and even trolls. And even though I do not follow Elon Muskrat himself, his posts now regularly show up on my feed. I think he's changed the algorithms to among other things suppress pro-Ukraine accounts and have the algorithms treat his posts as super valued. Also, while I'd get the very occasional notification about a post from someone I didn't follow for some reason, maybe? before, now on a daily basis literally pornographic tweets from people (well bots I assume) are showing up in my phone's notifications. Like if someone else were to look at my phone's notifications they'd see these. I have done absolutely nothing that could give twitter reason to think I want anything to do with NSFW content. This is not okay.

And then of course, there's the whole fact that he butchered the content moderation staff just days before a major election and then urged people to vote republican the day before it. The world's richest man buying one of the biggest forums of public discourse and using it to overtly push a political agenda on the eve of an election is despicable.

People on twitter are talking alot about leaving, but the most-mentioned alternative, "mastadon," doesnt' seem to be getting people very enthused. Also one of my friends pointed out that you'll notice _no one_ is mentioning facebook as a viable alternative. Oh how the mighty have fallen. I remember when I thought facebook had won the internet and was now unassailable for all time.
Also this is kind of reminding me of the death of livejournal, similarly without a good replacement (I looked the other day at the number of comments per entry regular users of Dreamwidth were getting compared to people here and it was much lower).

Anyway, my feelings on Elon Muskovite turning Twitter into a hellscape are (A) hey I just got here!; and (B) well okay thanks for breaking my burgeoning twitter addiction I guess.

Sunday Afternoon -- My phone is ringing, I fish it out of the pocket of my peacoat, note it's my father on the caller ID, and answer.

"Hello!"
("Hello?")
"Hello?" (it's hard to hear over the wind)
"I just wanted to make sure you guys were okay"
"Justaminute..." I need to take a moment to grip nearby beams as the boat lurches about 45 degrees to port (the side I'm sitting on).
"Well the bilge alarm is going off and half the crew is trying to save the dingy on the back -- one of the two ropes broke ..."
"[I forget and/or could barely hear what he said]"
"I'd hand the phone to mom but she's ten feet away and I can't easily get there"
("it's that bad?")
"Yes"
("Well then I should let you go I guess")
[pause while I hang on for dear life again)
"Yeah, I'll text you a link to my twitter, I'm updating that when I can"

I've always thought Twitter was by and large pretty overrated, especially the way most people use it. However, I have also always felt it IS useful when you're doing something with ongoing developments multiple people may be interested in, or as notes to self. I usually use it in the former fuction when on roadtrips or such, and in the latter function I use it for brief reviews of beers at beer festivals (or root beers / cream sodas I randomly try).
I had actually started twizzling the boat trip before it got exciting just because I figured I'd blog about it and so I was doing it really to take notes.

Apparently though my dad actually found my running twitterlog useful and even forwarded the link to a number of other relatives who proceeded to follow our ongoing adventure. At the time I had no idea!

Dad even commented afterwords that "twitter was actually useful for once!"

Mum reposted the updates themselves as an lj entry. Some of them are kind of garbled, either due to me trying to type them out in the middle of a storm or them comign into twitter in the wrong order.
Also some interesting developments were entirely left out either because I was busy at the time (I figured for example I probably shouldn't be texting while I was at the helm..) or it was just too dicey at the time and I needed both my hands to remain affixed to the boat (the log book actually blew away. And then they started a new one and THAT blew away -- they should have been keeping THEIR log on twitter obviously). Eventually I actually stopped reporting everytihng because I didn't want dad and anyone else following along at home to be TOO concerned (so I didn't mention when the staysail broke, or when SOMETHING broke off the top of the mast and nearly hit me...)

Anyway I'll work on another real update on the actual adventure, this update is just about twitter being useful.

But yeah, in summary: 24 hour sail to Santa Barbara ran into a gale and took 47 hours instead. Yes that's an entire day we didn't plan on. Real post about this coming soon.

And now, another poster by [livejournal.com profile] whirled!

Twitter
Generally speaking, I agree with [livejournal.com profile] superhappytime, that Twitter is strange and useless. I really really don't understand the popularity of it.

I set up a twitter account awhile ago to see what the fuss was all about and months, 94 updates, and 21 "followers" later, I still don't really get it.

However, I use it if I feel like exclaiming something that isn't really worth actually telling someone, just for my own amusement. Or if I'm going on a roadtrip I advise concerned parties (such as my mother) that I'll update my progress on twitter, since its convenient for that.

+ Brewing
Anyway, right now I'm brewing up some beer ("Coffee and Cream Oatmeal Stout"). Usually I rope someone into hanging out with me while I do it to keep me company, however I'm doing this batch all on my lonesome, so you, noble LJists, get to keep me company! And/or follow along at home! Thats right, I'm gonna give you a play by play via twitter! Actually I just realized as long as my laptop is handy I might as well do it via comments to this entry or under a cut here (thoughts on this?) hmm.
Also feel free to just hang out in the comments and keep me company. (=

Anyway, presently I'm bringing circa 3 gallongs of water to a boil in my stainless steel 5gal pot.
Turn your attention to http://twitter.com/Arrrghonaut for further progress. (=
