At Senate today the six senators elected a year ago made their farewell speeches and were replaced by six new senators. In their farewell speeches, Senator Spencer Higgens announced his intention to run next quarter as the Focus Presidential Candidate, Senator Kareem Salem announced his intention to run as the Lead Presidential Candidate, and Senator Jonathon "Independant" Sanders --who almost exactly a month ago left the Lead party with "no plans on running for office on another slate in the future" announced his intention to run as the Focus Vice Presidential Candidate. The ASUCD Advisor / SGAO then completely overstepped their authority and gave the six outgoing senators the certificates of election that the Elections Chairman had refused to issue last year (stating that he could not in good conscience certify the election after the qualifications for office had been retroactively changed). Technically this would finally make these outgoing senators real senators, at least for a few minutes until the new ones were sworn in -- but lacking the Elections Chairman's signature I guess they're not really certificates of election.

As I'm still in office, this bring the total number of Senators I've served with as Chief Justice to 57.

Inaccurate Tasering
I was also very amused today that our paper the Cal Aggie carried a "guest editorial" from the UCLA Daily Bruin titled "UCSA Taser Resolution Inaccurate, Uninformed." Coming from a school that not only is still a member of UCSA (the UC Student Assn), but was the location of the tasering incident itself, this chastisement is so much stronger than if it had come from us.
In conclusion, the staff of UCSA should be tasered.

So awhile ago I had created a facebook group dedicated to the game of Assassins. Nearly a year later there were still only six members in it because I never got around to promoting it and in the dark days before the Facebook Newsfeed things tended to go unnoticed on Facebook unless you put effort into them.
Well this morning I finally got around to sending facebook invites to a number of my friends. Some 12 hours later, 9 more of my friends have joined, and due to their joining being echoed on their friends' newsfeeds, 13 more people joined bringing membership up to 28.
I think I'll declare an actual physical meeting for next week. I will do this declaring tomorrow.

(And yes, for those who don't remember (& the 95% of you who weren't around back then) thats ASUCD Senator Jon Avidor & then-President Tiqula Bledsoe in the picture to the left here.)

Seceding from the Union
In a special operation today Emosnail agents obtained photographs of a draft bill that would remove ASUCD from the UC umbrella organization UCSA. In addition to the picture at right, a close up where the writing is more legible can be found here.

Judicial Adventures
I thought I'd highlight what we actually do on the ASUCD Supreme Court by posting a general summary of the last two meetings.

Last week On the Succession of the Chief Justice )

This Week Vice Chief Joe Harney was unable to be present so senior justice Tim Coady presided. We primarily discussed the first case of several that would make up the current scandal at Berkeley -- ASUC vs. Student Action Executive Slate. Basically it regarded whether or not chalking done before voting started that remained near polling locations on election day despite the Elections Chair having advised all candidates they needed to remove the chalkings could be considered "active and knowing campaigning."
So first I read them the relevant ASUC Berkeley bylaws and the evidence, and we discussed it. Then I read them the most relevant quotations from the plaintiff / defendant arguments (I particularly liked "[Defendant] Mr. Vakil states that “the act of chalking, which is the action of campaigning via chalking (the transfer of potential energy into kinetic energy with the intent of garnering votes) occurs at the time the chalk is transferred to the pavement.") and we discussed it further. Then I read the largest concurring opinion (basically the Berkeley Opinion consisted of a short general part they all agreed on, and then every justice was part of a different concurring opinion) and we discussed our thoughts on their findings. As the whole thing was rather complicated (as evidenced by the disagreement among the ASUC Berkeley justices) we didn't vote on a final conclusion.
Altogether I think we all found the exercise very useful and look forward, time permitting, to going over previous cases of our own or other such things in the future.

The UCSA Board of Directors voted No Confidence in their chairman our own Brent Laabs. Laabs subsequently resigned. This is not expected to improve relations between UC Davis & the UC Student Association.
At the same meeting UCSA voted to oppose Proposition 209, which is all good and well but well, its ten years too late. The UC Davis Grad Student Assn (GSA) voted against the No Confidence vote and against the Affirmative Action support bill -- UC Davis Undergrad representatives were avoiding the meeting entirely.

Really I'm just writing this to scoop the Aggie. (=

In other news, I think I'm getting sick. )= Also I played poker again today. Allan Rae went all in, but him and this other guy had been doing that a bunch just to scare people I think, and I had a pair of aces which I thought was pretty decent so I called him on it -- but he had some magical combination of cards that I didn't really understand but apparently it was better. d=

Also, thinking about writing a Letter to the Editor to the Daily Cal (the UC Berkeley paper) regarding the current attempt of their student gov't majority party to use $22,600 for their personal benefit. On the plus side, a letter from the ASUCD Chief Justice would probably be pretty novel to them, on the negative side though, even though its not my jurisdiction, its an equivalent jurisdiction, and I'm not sure how appropriate it would be for me to weigh in on it like that.

Find the cat in this picture

I guess the central parts of the cactus are so old all the prickles have worn away making it essentially kinda like a giant cat-tower. Pelekea Cachaça could often be found perched up there looking at birds.

Foyerparty

Saturday evening there was a party at the house off Duke in the house inhabited by Chris "C-Bunch" Bunch, Olivia Pisano, & Dave Carlson -- which I'm going to refer to as The Foyer House until its formally named because it has a huge foyer and its too unwieldy to name all the occupants every time it comes up.
My roommate Jason came with me. Fun was had by all - see pictures.

Sunday Morning my former roommate and good friend Ben came up to visit. We hung out a bit and ate at Plutos. Sunday Evening I went and played poker at the Foyer House again. I was doing well for myself for a bit, but then this guy Jeremy who was almost out of chips kept getting good hands, and I figured he must be getting desperate and can't KEEP getting good hands so I thought he was bluffing .. but he wasn't )=

Also, C-Bunch & Candice have joined the livejournal revolution.

This is what the party looked like from my perspective. (=
See the rest of the pictures HERE, but note they are in reverse order there -- the first ones are in the bottem right

Quote of the Day
"[Kai Savaree-Ruess] keeps talking about what a waste of time congress is, when he had a blood alcohol content of about .13 half of the time." -Anonymous, regarding the UC Student Assn congress.
Despite having UC Davis student Brent Laabs as the Chairman of the UCSA Board of Directors, relations remain extremely strained between UCD & UCSA.
