I caught up with George Andrews, today, recent campaign manager of US Congress candidate Mike Dugas. Though Dugas lost to heavily entrenched incumbant Bob Matsui, Congressman Matsui passed away three months later (this January 1st). It has since been a matter of much speculation as to whether Dugas is going to run again in the special election to replace him.
George Andrews informed me today that Matsui's widow will be running in the special election, noting that widows make invincible politicians. So we I then came to a logical conclusion: in order for Dugas to defeat Mrs Matsui, what he needs to do is become a widower himself! "but seriously, elections aren't won by being funny. Unfortunately they are won by evil phone banks and evil phone calls." There you have it, from the man who got Keith Shively elected. He proceeded to complain about being woken up every morning with phone calls from network reports wanting to know if Dugas is running again, and grumbled about how unruly Daily Show reporters broke his pellet gun.

PS: Trillian 3.0 really sucks. I think I'm going to try to find v2.0 again. Please note that while my away messege has said I've been in the library for the past three days, that is only because I can't figure out how to change it.

Today the ASUCD Elections Committee had to answer to two complaints lodged against them before a Student Judicial Affairs board. There were two hearings, with a ten minute recess between them. The board consisted of approximately several students from the SJA board. The Plaintiffs were “the Orwellians.”
The first hearing was regarding the disadvantage the Elections Committee caused numerous candidates by saying that it was forbidden to campaign before candidates had been verified as eligible by the Elections Committee. It turns out such a rule does not exist, and moreover only one Certain Party campaigned during the effected week, gaining an arguably significant advantage thereby. What I thought was most significant about the arguments raised during this hearing was when the Elections Committee stated that the Certain Party in question could do so because they “verify their own candidates.”
Even if it were a rule, and this Certain Party could reliably verify its own candidates ahead of time, in the interest of fairness one would have to constrain them to the same time constraints as everyone else, even if it meant that their verified candidates had to wait for everyone else to be verified – in effect the Elections Committee admitted in this that they consciously gave a huge advantage to a specific party.

The second hearing was regarding the Elections Committee’s deletion of certain parts of the official Orwellian statement. While the Elections Committee had claimed they had taken the action to avoid a potential libel issue, the Orwellians began with an absolutely amazing barrage of evidence. [livejournal.com profile] revchad, speaking for the Orwellians, defined libel using two law books (one by an expert on contracts and torts, the other by the American Bar Assn), a quote from the ASUCD attorney, and a quote from none other than Mr Igor Birman (!!); and then, as one of the principal defenses against libel is that a statement is true, they provided no less than nine newspaper articles detailing the factual nature of the claims against former senator James Ackerman. To top all this off they cited the official United States Supreme Court opinion in Times v Sullivan, that “debate on public issues should be uninhabited, robust, and wide-open, and that it may well include vehement, caustic, and sometimes unpleasantly sharp attacks on government and public officials.”
Also quoted, as evidence of the inequal application of the Elections Committee’s policy, was the official statement of former candidate Dana Davies-Shaw, in which quotes deriding the slates had been permitted to remain. This was significant and amusing because Dana is a member of the JSA judicial board. Though Dana had sat out from this case, it was still amusing to see the judicial board served up a quote from one of their own.
I’m hard pressed to make an analogy for the awesome devastation of this attack, but I think one might say it was like the attack on Pearl Harbour, if the Americans had had it coming, and the Japanese caught all the American aircraft carriers at dock… and maybe even the Japanese and dropped their own nuclear bomb at that time for good measure.
In response the Elections Committee tried to be illusive and argue circularly to the point that the judicial board sounded visibly irritated at them several times. I think my nomination for the “worst argument ever” award goes to the Elections Committee for saying that because the Orwellians could have said anything they wanted in publicity produced with their own money, it didn’t matter that the Elections Committee edited the statements submitted through them.

The Opinion of the judicial board will apparently be submitted to their SJA keepers no later than three days from now, from whence it will be submitted to the ASUCD Advisor, from whence it will probably be edited and/or missfiled. Call me crazy but I'd rather it simulteniously be released to the Parties and (maybe) the ASUCD Advisor, as the advisor step is unnecessary, and frankly I don't trust her even with so weighty a matter. It will be arriving on her very last day here, which will mean (A) less motivation for her not to "accidently" shred it, (B) on her very last day here she'll probably recieve a document detailing the grievious error of the policies she personally caused - a pleasant parting gift from the multicephalous justice organs of UC Davis.

Anyway, other than that, I spent the whole day in the library once again. I happened to casually glance out the window I was sitting near at one point when who should I see riding his bike across a park bench directly below, but roommate Jason. Silly Jason.
And then the laptop directly behind me was stolen when its operator ran off for two minutes to use the restroom. Worse still, it wasn’t her computer, but her friend’s, who had also been sitting nearby. As the desks in this area have little walls around them for maximum hermitage, no one, not even the computer’s unfortunate owner who had been about two feet from it at the time, noticed the theft. Upon realization of this crime the previously militantly antisocial students in the area, all of whom would have risked their very lives to avoid interaction, suddenly became a united community of mutually alarmed and concerned students – actually talking to eachother.

During my dinner break I consulted with Miss Kristy Heidenberger over the phone as to where I should eat. She ended up reading through the list of eating establishments in the daviswiki, which I found amusing. Eventually I gave in to the call of big juicy hamburgers and ate at Ali Baba’s again.
I ended my day in Café Roma, which was open with free refills on coffee till one or two (we left around 12:40) with Kritsy. There we had the unique priviledge of sitting next to (Dare I say sharing a power socket with even!) the creator himself of Daviswiki.org, Mr Philip Neustrom. Also present in the café at the time were ASUCD Senator Donnie Cohen-Cutler, former KDVS (90.3FM) director Miss Teresa Kenny, and recent US Congress candidate Mr Mike Dugas.

Life as a Library Refugee
Now that the weekend is over I must contend with the persecution of Davis parking enforcement, as there is nowhere within several miles of campus where one can park for free for more than two hours. Additionally I had to be here at 9am this morning since the book I am using is on reserve and hence turns into a pumpkin if I wander away from the library for too long with it. So it looks like today I am going to spend the day as an itinerate Davis parking refugee, scurrying about to avoid the persecution of Davis Parking Enforcement.
To make matters worse, neither food nor drink is permitted in the library and this is enforced in with truncheon and jackboot rigor. And the University hasn't even had the merciful conscience to locate an eatery or even small coffee dispensery anywhere near the library. And, the coup de grace of making the library an unpleasant place to spend your time -- the bathrooms are ill maintained, and lacking in toilet seat covers. I don't know about the ladies, but few males indeed will dare to sit upon a public toilet (particularly an ill maintained one!) without holy protection of a toilet seat cover.

Blogological Experimentation - Curious about page hites, I'd monitered the hits (as registered by the pictures) in the entry the day before and determined it got 513 hits in 24 hours. If I wasn't so busy I'd do a similar study asap to get the data at exactly a year interval.. maybe in the next few days if I get a chance. Also I declare the theories of jurist Donald Dworkin to be crap.

Saturday
On Saturday Kristy and I went in to Sacremento because she needed pink hairdye from arden faire mall. Sacremento freeways really are the most confusing road system I have ever seen.

While we're headed down an escalater I notice a guy at the bottem with a hand-held video camera videoing us coming down the escalator. I figure he's videoing the escalator traffic for god knows what reason and act like I don't notice. Then after we've reached the bottem and walked fifty feet, I turn around and see the camera is STILL pointed directly at US. Freakish.

Also I observed once again something I'd already noted on a number of previous occasions; when I had huge muttonchops whenever I met someone else who did we would nod at eachother like "nice muttonchops," but whenever I meet some random guy with a mohawk we are more likely to squint suspiciously at eachother.

Saturday night Kristy and I stopped by the party at the Loyola House, but there were (no longer?) any bands playing, no generally available alcohol, and no bonfire. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure it was an awesome party, parties there always are, but Kristy and I only had a 40 of steel between us. I offered it to Kristy which apparently impressed her greatly since she knows what a sacrifice I'd be making, but in the end we opted to roam elsewhere.

Sunday
Sunday was Christie's b-day, so we ate with all her friends at Woodstocks Pizza (where I ate most of a large pizza), and then went back to her place in the colleges (same apartment we always go to in the colleges). After having just one beer (actually some drink the bought en mass from the dollar store!), I began to feel extremely sick.. specifically like I was way way way too full. I think it made the pizza expand or something.

Monday
I try to keep my computer free of computer games out of fear they will steal all my time away. In a moment of weakness I downloaded Civilization III however. It appears to be every bit as excellent as I'd hoped. Now I fear for my life.

Other
It has come to my attention that a number of persons believe in a false method of shaking their fists, one that involved moving the wrist but not the arm. This limp-wristed method is clearly false and to be avoided.

Tomorrow, the 20th of this month, is the one year anniversery of the existence of this livejournal. Specifically tomorrow at 19:28:20.

I'd like to officially inaugerate also the planning of my birthday party 2004, which will be in the general area of May 14th. No plans have been made yet, but need to find a place to have it and bands to play it, so tell your friends.

   And um a girlfriend too.

April fools on that second part. I just had to make SOME kind of april fools joke, as I hadn't yet. But today the car was formally transferred into my possession. So... this is a historic day.

In Other News: I was delusional this morning. No really. Well, my computer clock is slow. I unfortunately have had a tendency not to change it back to the correct time until it gets far enough off that it causes me to be late for something. That happened this morning, as the clock had become exactly half an hour behind. I therefore thought it was 9:00 when in fact it was 9:30. I proceeded to miss my bus. Catching the next bus I was about ten minutes late for class. To prevent this from happening in the future I eliminated the display of the clock on the computer, because as we all know a stopped clock is more often correct than a slow clock; and unable to stop the clock, (or make it run accurately) my only recourse was its removal. I shall no longer be deluded into a false sense of time, but will I no longer ever be delusional? YOU decide! (=

I had HIS131C (Ancient Regime 1650-1800) and COM6 (Comparative Lit: Myths and Legends) for the first time today. COM6 looks really fun so I'm excited, but I need to get a bunch of books for it. Psha on books. But.. I'm excited. The History class.. I dunno the teacher seems kinda fascist. She seems psychologically rational unlike many other teachers, but fascist in her assignments (we need to have a question ready each day on an index card larger than 3x5, among other things).
In the history class I knew five people of the 54 or so. Thats like.. ten percent of the class. Craziness. (Courtney Caruso, Sarah, The British Guy, Andrew Whelan (Campus Editor of the California Aggie) and... Russ Fagley I think was the other. I contrast of about 78 people in COM6 I spotted all of one person I knew (Kris Edelmyer).
It occured to me today that I actually could drop one of my classes.. and I'm all about taking my time. I think I may drop HIS131C.

My mother and I had lunch today with miss Garian Cika. I dated Garian for like three months last year, and my mother thinks that Garian is like.. the most wonderful girl EVER. I earn brownie points with mom just by mentioning Garian's name I swear. Last summer I'd want to visit San Diego.. parents totally not about to give me permission to take the car the two hours down to SD, until I mention that maybe I'll visit Cika. In response to the revelation that I now have a car, Garian is like "road trip!!" with anyone else, knowing mother's scepticism regarding the car's dependability, she'd have been like "haha.. NO" but noo she's all about it and later she (mother) is like "I'll buy you're food if you go on a road trip with her!" Silly mother.

Hmm.. what else what else... there were the cookie wars on campus today. I think I'll write an Echidna article on the subject and maybe someday even publish it.
Later this evening I saw notorious campus republican Mike Dugas, cal aggie conservative columnist Zack Amendt, campus green party bigwig Sonny Mohatmazedi, and another person of liberal tendencies I didn't know sitting at a table talking. I KNEW it was a vast pan-politco-spectum conspiracy!
No actually they were having the most rational, philosophical discussion I have ever seen people have on such a controvercial issue. No one interrupted anyone, no one made any statements that weren't insightful and meaningful, rebuttals were similarly made, the entire exchance was amicable and respectful. I was very impressed.

this is cool

After having BBQ Pork something at Fuzios, which looked suspiciously similar to the Pod Thai that Antoinette got, and wasn't as good as my usual Firecracker Pork Fusilli (AKA the best dish EVER, ANYWHERE), we went to the show at Delta Venus. Squish the Bad Man, Estereo, and Radio Cure were playing there. Not my usual kind of music, but it was cool. I really liked the last group. My friend Annie was in Estereo, and Arjun and Eric from The List were there.
We ended up not going to the movie we had been planning on seeing and just stayed at Delta Vee until the end of the show.

After all that was over and Antoinette had dispersed I got myself over to Tamera's party. Now Tamera has a well established precedent of having good parties; the kind of parties where there's a finite number of friends who pretty much all know eachother and we just ahve us a good ole time. But this one.. I don't know, something had gone terribly wrong. Everyone knew it had, even and especially Tamera I think. Through some connection of one of her housemates every wanna-be gangster from Davis High was at that party. It was.. ghetto. I think we were all relieved when the cops broke up the party.
Of course several of the most infamous people in Davis were there, like Mike Dugas, who in accordance with party tradition found himself shirtless, and the Freshman, who has somehow managed to endear himself to many people but I think if it were up to me I'd still put him in the Soviet Lubyanka for several months and forcefully instill some social skills. And then there was The British Guy. Silly British guy. And of course everyone's favorite individual of Greek derivation, Sarah was there.

Today I am going to try to actually get an issue of the Chosen Echidna out. I thiink I'm on issue 11 now.. or maybe 12.. its been like freakin three months. If yahoogruops has closed down the newsletter for inactivity I swear I'm going on a killing spree. Anyway, first I need to add all people that have acrued in the last three months to the newsletter list, and then I need to edit it all together.. and.. yea.
But first I think I'm going to draw a snail on my wall.

And in accordance with tradition I apparently have to make a reference to Vanessa at least once per entry so uhh.. she didn't go out Saturday night as far as I know. Thats not very cool now is it Vanessa. (=

Oh and at the party Lindsy, having consumed indeterminate amounts of alcohol, and with an amiable smile, said to me "Kris you know I think your an asshole and want to go off at you," to which I replied "yes, Lindsy, I do," similarly smiling and friendly. And I think it was the most sincere thing I've ever heard anyone say.. when people are saying GOOD things, even if they think they mean it, so often they are exagerating, underagerating, or similarly misrepresenting their feelings.. so yea.. it was beautiful. I think any claims she may have against me are largely related to the AMIJ Incident.
