The weekend before last (Nov 18-21 actually) I was at the AMWEST Model UN Conference in Las Vegas. My official report is here.

Anyway, barely had I returned (Tues Nov 21), then I set off (the next day, Wednes Nov 22) to drive down south for Tryptophane Day. Fortunately most of my relatives were gathered at our cabin in the hills south of The Grapevine
On the way down I found one of those secret truck gas stations I'd always wondered about (where trucks sneak off to to gas up). A 76 gas truck was refueling there despite the fact there was a 76 station on the other corner, which I found amusing. Then two nice white cars passed me on the freeway. The first thing I noticed was the tall antennas sticking out the top. They has "CA exempt" plates and the numbers "91" & "92" respectively in little digits on the bumper, but no other markings. Curious I edged up until I was alongside the back one. Looking over I see a police sargeant (with an armful of gold chevrons on his shoulder) staring back at me. Creeped out I quickly dropped behind him and waited for some unsuspecting vehicle to fly past.

Thanksgiving was pleasant. Then on Friday I drove down to Mission Viejo where I recovered from the rustic life for a few hours before proceeding down to San Diego to hang out with the delightful Kristy Kristersson.
On Saturday we (Kristy & I, & her parents) went to the San Diego Zoo, which was excellent as always. I saw some sort of mustelid I thought was really cool but can't remember the name. That evening we ate at this place Fred's in old town, where I had delicious calamari tacos.
And on Sunday I drove the ten hours back up to Davis. Altogether I spent at least 20 hours driving, which is a pretty traumatizing thought. At least I had a lot of time to think about things ... mostly future prospective LJ entries and/or ideas for ASUCD ;)

I still don't know what I'm going to do about the "year ago today" series - I liked it a lot but it was starting to take up too much space on every entry, and that makes the whole lj pretty recursive. Anyway while linking previous AMWEST entries I noticed there was a lot about the simmering drama in ASUCD three years ago...
Three Years Ago Today: AMWEST 2003 - And several links to aggie which were broken by The Great URL Massacre
Two Years Ago Last Week: My Impeachment in Retrospect - And I lead the charge against the corruption of the former Elections Committee, as part of the ongoing War on Wrong. Eventually the Schachter Elections Committee was axed and replaced by the Orwellians

So yeah, I left Davis around 6pm yesterday (Sunday), my and my two little girls, and I come rolling in here about 26 hours later with the addition of some pond water, some polywogs, a whole bunch of frogs, and a woman old enough to be my mother!!

Okay so it was my mother. And by two little girls I mean the rats Leia and Delilah. When I left I was worried they'd be too hot so I put a bunch of icecubes in their cage with them. By the time I stopped at Merced for In-N-Out I was worried they'd be too cold, but upon examination they had piled all the icecubes into one pile in the corner of their cage, crafty girls!

I took the 99 instead of the Five, because there are more towns along it and I figured there was a pretty good chance my car would explode. About two hours out I realized the first thing I'd forgotten: the two bottles of wine made by Coleman that I was going to give to my parents. Later I'd realize I forgot my flipflops as well (rainbows!) )=
Anyway I think it was about 1am when I finally reached the gate into Tweedy, but then I had to deal with a riddle of sorts. The key to the gate was "locked with a combination lock to a chain around a post -- it'll be obvious," so in the moonlight I searched the base of every pole until finally I found out with a lock and chain. Fifteen minutes of fiddling with the combination lock later I finally got that open and managed to get through the gate. Finally the last part of the quest was before me, the part I'd been dreading the entire way: the final ascension up to the cabin.
On the first attempt the car began sliding backwards and stalled. Several attempts to restart it ended in stalling and sliding further backwards. As there was a deep rut behind me (the road curved at that point on the steep hill), if this could continue the car could end up in very precarious straights indeed. Finally I tried one last time, giving the engine a mighty wallop of gas, and successfully charged up the hill.
Later I was told it was probably a good thing I didn't try to walk in from the gate, as there are mountain lions about.

The next day we (maternal grandparents, mother, myself) bollocksed about for awhile. Myself and mother went down to the lake, where there were millions of little frogs. Then we saw a 3 and a half foot gopher snake, which mother proceeded to pick up by the tail like that Australian guy (Crickey!). We waited around to avoid coming back through LA during rush hour traffic, and then returned. As mentioned, mother had decided to bring back some polywogs and frogs.

This evening I stopped by Diedrichs Coffee and found Villem, and friends from HS, Russel Renzas and Kerry Wilcox.

Also the demolition of the wooden structure at Little Big People Park in Davis began today. Inexorably society continues to move from interesting and unique things to prefabricated plastic. )=

So for reallies this time I'm leaving today. Current plan is to make a five hour dash down to the family cabin in Tweedy, which is near The Grapevine.

Cabin certainly doesn't have internet so I'll be out of touch with the blogosphere. I think I might be able to make a phone post or so though.. I'm not sure how long I'll be there. But when I come out again, I'll be in OC.

My carmobile has been acting particularly shoddy lately so I'm a bit skeptical about whether or not it will survive. Which is such sauce because while I am confident I can survive when the car breaks down in Coalinga, I'm planning on bringing the two rats, Leia & Delilah with me. Its much harder to get around without a car in the middle of nowhere with two pet rats, and I don't want them to overheat )=

And I feel endlessly behind in terms of getting ready to leave here, which is weird because all my entries from around this time from one or two years ago talk about how I can't wait to get out of here at the first moment its feasible.

In Other News: apparently The Man intends to demolish the wooden structure at Little Big People Park1. It met regulations when I was on the renovations committee three years ago and I'd imagine it still does, The Man was just itching to get rid of it.. probably figured I'd graduated this June when I was supposed to and He could bulldoze my park with me unawares!
1The wooden structure isn't pictured on Daviswiki, mainly because the geodesic dome outshines it in photogenicity. I was actually at the park the day before yesterday though and have a picture or two I'll put up.

But basically because I'm trying to finish all this shiznas and leave this livejournal entry is just a bunch of fluff. Everything I wanted to write required some kind of preparation, as decent megeblogtastic posts should, so I just sat down and started writing.

Year Ago Today: Declared Goal # 17 - Get more comments. Which as noted in last entry, I was fairly succeessful at. Also polling indicates 66% of the readers want more tales of debauchery (--would eat words year later!), followed by a 42% demand for megabloggery and theorizing, least interest in underbloggery.
