School resumed on wednesday. I have class monday through thursday this quarter. I'm signed up for Recent US Foreign Policy, Analysis of US Foreign Policy, Consitution and Justice Systems, Judicial Process & Behaviour and swedish 2.
Professor Spriggs of POL153 (Proc & Behaviour) came off as a fangorious asshat in my opinion but others who have had him report he's alright. Looks like most of the class is going to be reading and discussing cases so I'm excited. He used the "if you don't have this prereq you WILL be dropped so I suggest you leave now" ploy. Of course they can't do that. Professors can't drop students under any conditions. I thought it was kind of funny to start a law class with a threat the teacher doesn't have the right to carry out.

My former roommate, Adrian Dayton-Jones, in his natural habitat, the Coffee House

I finally have a digital camera!! Parents decided finally to up and send me their old one and get a new one themselves. Now indeed a new era of photographic enlightenment shall reign upon Davis!

Last night (Monday night) was the most fun I've had in months.

Studiousness
It started out with me adamently doing my best to get a lot of homework done see. Then Kristy called and we wanted to see eachother but I was like "I only have time to like say hi and give you a hug pretty much" cause I was determined to get hella work done.
Then Jill (remember, my roommates are Jill and Adrian) starts talking about how much she loathes living with girls and how bothered she is that she'll have to live with girls again next year (She's transferring elsewhere). This somehow culminates in her agreeing to take a shot.

An Offer I Can't Refuse
Now see, Jill NEVER drinks. I was just about to resume working but now this was an extraordinary event that required my full attention.
But alas we had no alcohol on hand it turns out! For this amazing opportunity I was willing to go so far as to go on an alcohol run, so the four of us scamper to Safeway asap (this is like.. 11:30pm?).
Due to rampant peer pressure and in order to encourage Jill's drinking, I say I will drink as much as she does. Needless to say its only a matter of time before we've all had a number of shots. Then we call a mutual good friend of all of ours (well Jill has ironically maintained previously that she wasn't nearly as excited about him as the rest of us). He shall remain anonymous for reasons soon to be illuminated because a number of persons in Davis who may be reading this know him. He comes over shortly however and joins in the drunken bonding

In the Name of Science
Since Jill had never had more than three shots before and didn't know whether or not she was a "lightweight," we all felt a formal scientific inquiry was in order. Therefore, I took notes:

2415 hours -- 1.5 shots -- observations: ears reportedly tingly; nostalgic/whimsical; no redness (perhaps not "the redness type")
2.75 shots -- observations: "that one tasted worse"; ears not tingling this time; didn't notice Kris eating Adrian's sandwich; accusatory and harsh (very)
[very was added five minutes later after further observation]; inconclusive redness; mild paranoia & introspection; sensitive hearing; asked "didn't I never tell you that?"; "misterpeted"; brutal honesty; "just getting around to things I've been meaning to say"; distorted sense of time; APATHY [written in all caps at Adrian's recommendation]; confusion regarding [NAME WITHHELD]'s identity!!
2448 hours -- 4.00 shots -- observations: "taste is getting progressively worse"; a bit mellow, & some memory loss (2458 hours); brutally honest; (2538 hours)
 2538 hours -- 4.00 shots -- observations: "honestly I feel it much less than when I started"; has moved on to wine; is eating apple; "can't let my apple go to waste;

NOTE: I am aware that 24 hour clock systems restart at midnight with 0000 hours; however I choose not to "reset" the hours until I've gone to bed and my day has officially ended.

"Can't Let My Apple Go To Waste"
Sometime after uttering those words Jill and our good friend [NAME WITHHELD] suddenly and unexpectedly scampered off to her room never to be heard from again that night, though [NAME WITHHELD] had some pretty impressive hickeys the next day.

Conclusion
In one evening the five of us killed a bottle of vodka, a bottle of wine, and a small amount of rum, and more importantly our dear Jill drank more than she ever had before and had a rare and sudden hook-up with one of Davis' most sought-after boys, and everyone involved (well I haven't interrogated Jill since) agreed it was the most fun they'd had in a long long time.

Incidentally one of the main causes of my need to study, a paper due thursday, has been postponed five days. So we all live happily ever after.

Quote of the Evening
"...even though you're my friend, I'd rock you like a hurricane..." -Adrian, to Jill.

As previously noted, yesterday was the one year anniversery of me turning 21. It also incidentally was my 22nd birthday.

Thai Bistro
A bunch of us went to Thai Bistro for dinner. Kristy and I were late due to the impossibility of finding parking in downtown davis, so we missed Lamar Heystek, but he left a bottle of vodka for me with my friends (dutch vodka of course).
Anyway, I was a bit concerned because both [livejournal.com profile] livinsmall and [livejournal.com profile] obisan69 had reported unsatisfactory experiences with Thai Bistro (former, latter). The service however was completely adequate and the food delicious. I got this red curry + bamboo shoots + basil + jalepenos dish and it was extremely scrumptious (I think it might have been called "Dai kang?").

Neither Adrian nor Jill had had Thai food before and they both loved it. In addition to the aforementioned, we also had in attendance little Christie, Courtney Caruso ([livejournal.com profile] deaconfrost224) , one of my good friends from freshman year who I haven't kept in touch with so much recently, Ben, and of course Kristy.

After eating, we all (minus Courtney) went to Kristy's to partake in her mad skillz at making cake & tiramisu (we had both actually because Kristy is excellent). Then Adrian and Jill suddenly both had to go home around 10pm (::caugh::tomakeout::caugh::) and the rest of us just hung out and talked for a long time.

Kristy got me a flogging molly shirt and a strongsauce belt. ijockherso.

Completely Unrelated
Strongsauce pictures - I found this site the other day while idly plugging things into google and seeing what came up, specifically that one was a result of the word "shipwreck." The first word I tried was "hind" by which I mean the beautiful russian MI-24 helicoptor, and I mention this random tangent because we were watching Firefly today and there was an ambulance shuttle / hovering vehicle / thing that was TOTALLY made from a Hind frame and I was loving it.

Picking up where I left off, no less than ten minutes after making my addendum to last entry, I met with my roommate Adrian and some friends of his where they were sitting with their guitars on the quad. There, with a number of other bystanders, we were amused for about 40 minutes by the antics of a crazy religious man on the quad.

Unlike other crazy religious men, this one actually referred to himself as a prophet or oracle. He alternated between shouting his sermon at the local student traffic, occasionally singing, and at one point suddenly adopting a conversational tone for five minutes. Adrian used his new tape-recorder & attached microphone to record most of it.

At one point I hippie tried to offer him a cup of water but he pointedly refused to make eye contact with the hippie, turning his back to him continually and addressing the crowd in different directions.

Eventually a someone from SPAC (Student Programs & Activities Center I believe), a girl who looked to be a student herself, came to tell him that he had to speak on the other corner of the quad, the "free speech corner" to which they always attempt to exile counterprotestors ("Yes, you CAN counterprotest, but over there in the appropriate designated location ::points to distant and forlorn corner of quad::") and other undesirables .
To these attempts the crazy religious man responded "this is America, I preach whereever I want.. we have this thing called freedom of speech in America, I don't know how they do things in Somoa or whereever you're from" followed shortly by "you're not very pretty you know."
I don't think Jesus would approve of those latter comments.

Poll: Is "proxyzation" too silly a word to coin for a term paper? I'm writing about the tendency of states to sponsor separatist groups within states they wish to weaken rather than wage war against them -- carrying out their intentions by proxy in other words -- proxyzation.

Today I mentioned to my roommate Adrian that I craved icecream sandwiches. He responded "me too! Lets get some!" and forthwith we set off walking down to the former Ray's Food Place (now "Food Faire" or something lame like that).
I'm not a fan of these hot summery days, but the warm evenings can't be beat. Walking back I got nostalgic and fondly recalled all the warm summer evening adventures of my college career and concluded that all in all college is a truly wonderful experience and all the people I know back home who chose not to go to college really made the worst decision of their lives (completely leaving the educational and career inhancing aspects out of it, which multiplies my conclusion). [/sappiness]

In another random declaration of craving, I later developed a severe craving for corned beef, boiled cabbage, and mashed potatoes. I think I can attribute this actually to roommate Jill polling us on behalf of her boyfriend uncommited lover Misha "what goes well with sausage?" And she wrinked her nose at me over boiled cabbage and mashed potatoes! Such lack of culture.
Anyway, it only dawned on me AFTER I'd been telling Kristy about my craving and continued on to call my mother to book such a meal for when I got home that I realized that it was St Patricks Day and I happened to be craving the most Irish meal imaginable. Weird.
And then I find out that Sarina apparently cooked that exact meal today but Kristy and I didn't find out until it was too late. I was absolutely heartbroken.

[discussing who we would all be if we were characters in a sitcom] "You're like the one who's never funny" -Jill, or maybe Kristy "What-ever, I'm the one that everyone cheers for when they enter the room" -Me, "You're Al Bundy???" -Adrian [everyone laughs] yes I'm definitely the one who tries unsuccessfully to be funny. Jill says I'm "Ross" from Friends. I'm not sure what that entails.

So I'm riding the bus home after the ASUCD Court meeting this evening and find myself sitting by an ASUCD senator-elect, we'll call him Q. Eventually:
"Hey do you know anything about the statute that the Elections Committee has to publicize all the information about how the voting went?"
"Well lets take a look.." [I start to open my briefcase]
But he was getting off at the next stop. There was another Justice on either side of us too.
Someday I'll be a real lawyer. Someday.. someday I'll be a real Supreme Court Justice. (=

Did I mention that ASUCD Administrative Plans are to be in accordance with the Format and Guide Sheet that was last updated in 1979 (25 years ago!), which I don't think anyone else currently knows ever existed.

I never get very many results on winmx anymore. With every week that goes by there seem to be fewer results coming up for things, and I can't find songs that should be readily abundant... I'm getting the feeling that there's some new better music harvester that everyone is using and I don't know what it is. Any ideas anyone?

Politics

Mar. 2nd, 2004 08:18 pm
aggienaut: (asucd)

On Sunday I flyered for Lamar again, Monday I went to Fuzios with Kristy, and today I voted.
A certain ASUCD senator-elect helped us on Sunday. We'll call him Y. He said he had voted for me when I ran for senate even though he didn't agree with my politics. I said "I don't make political statements, so how can you not like my politics?" He said "I thought you were a libertarian" "No.. libertarians are completely irrational."
For the record, I am not a libertarian. Libertarians are what you get when you take a republican, remove their moral convictions and any rationality you may find. I am militantly independant, and wholly rational. Every political spectrum test I've ever taken has put me dead center of the political spectrum. I am the swing voter and its not because I don't care.
Being registered "decline to state" allows me to vote most party's ballot in the primaries. Obviously the republican one has but one choice on it so there's no point in voting that, and it would be less than rational to vote for a third party, so I found myself evaluating the democratic candidates. Now I know all these candidates have been making a lot of noise lately and everyone has been all hepped up on their favorite candidate for months now, but I'm proud to say I had no preconcieved opinion at all before I started reading their statements. It pleases me to know that the millions of dollars spent on advertising were completely lost on me (I don't watch TV and have thus far pointedly ignored everyone's best efforts at selling me the candidates). I am the swing voter and only rational assimilation of qualifications and statements will get my vote.

No I'm not telling you who I decided upon. I don't make political statements.

Today's Controversy
   Dixon Ticonderoga
or Sanford, which pencils are the best? I have to say, I have a box of a dozen Ticonderoga, and despite the claim on the box, these "1388-2 soft" pencil's are NOT in my opinion the "world's best pencil" as the box claims. I have a few Sanford pencils which I find quite delightful, but they're old and getting short. Another strong contender though is the paper-mate pencil that I acquired after someone administered a weird poll to [livejournal.com profile] pavelthegeek and I about the herbs found in sobe...

Along with Adrian, Jill, and I, there is also a bunny that lives at 229 The Trees. Adrian and I have named it "Sputnik," though Jill insists on calling it Herbert or Bernard or something. Also, Adrian and I realize the bunny is secretly filled with evil. I believe its aspirations are not dissimilar to those pictured here. It did escape from its containment-unit once and chew through Adrian's PS2 cable once in fact.
Firefly is an amazing series. It aired on Fox with about 14 episodes before being cancelled before christmas 2002. I'd never heard of it but Adrian got the whole series on DVD and when he plays an episode, everything stops around here. Even Jill can't escape it, and the bunny doesn't concentrate on radiating so much evil. Apparently the series is being made into a movie now though, so we may all rejoice. --really does take break to watch episode IV of firefly before continuing--
You will become addicted to this.

Kristy wrote an excellent new livejournal bio. I have a crush on her.

aggienaut: (fish)

So Saturday night Adrian, Kristy and I stayed at our place (Mine and Adrian's, "the Casbah") and drank and watched the movie Bottle Rocket. Then Azver and his sister Fem-Azver stopped by briefly.

Sunday Miss Heidenberger and I went to the Sactomento Zoo. It was smallest Zoo I've ever been to, and much to my heartbreak it didn't have anteaters!!! We did, however, definitely see emu's getting their hump on.

Adrian and I have determined that the Simpsons this season are particularly good. We also determined the cookies which we discovered deep in our pantry are still very good, despite the fact that we have absolutely no idea how old they are. I love discovering things in my pantry.
In other TV-related news, there are currently two commercials which I absolutely abhor. One is the "McDonalds" commercial which spends more time advertising how good the basketball player that endorses there new burger is than the burger itself. I don't remember the guys name but it ends with "blah blah, as soon on TV." The other one is the trailer of the "SAT" movie. The movie.. I dunno, just makes me angry... its just.. so stupid!! making a big thing about something thats not. Maybe its the political implications as well: there are certain elements that loathe the SAT and think it should play a lesser part in college admittions; I for one got into college on the strength of my SATs, and think that its a more accurate indicator of successful use of college education than HS GPA; the movie implies that the SAT is an evil random impediment to people's dreams.
Another trailer doesn't bother me AS much, because it looks ridiculously laughably bad, is "You Got Served" or something like that. It looks like some ridiculous attempt at redoing "bring it on" but with guys breakdancing. "Bring it On" was already a terrible attempt at the all too common sports-movie formula, and IT made me feel physically ill.

So after the MUN meeting today I go to the Coffee House, where Brillaint Red Lights, The Fiery Furnaces, and Ted Leo & The Pharmacists are playing for free.
Shortly after getting there, Azver gives me the rest of his bottle of wine (in a brown paper bag of course), and then Entertainment Council director Andrea Chalupa gives me a peice of pizza. Mmm everything is better when its free.
Hung out with my apartmentmate Adrian was at the show. Briefly our other apartment-mate, Jill showed up as well. In an unprecedented display of roommate bonding we all completely incidentally found ourselves standing together at a show.
Then I walk over the The Colleges where Kristy is at the apartment of Courtbutt, Christie, Sarina, & Adam. While finishing my conversation with Aaron on the phone I see my friend Nat(alie Kempkey), an unusual happening since she no longer goes to Davis. Apparently she came in just for the show. And scarcely had I finished greeting her then Brian McInnis emerges from a nearby apartment to say hi. Kristy then emerged and saved me from more random encounters in the Colleges.
Courtbutt sewed two of the three missing buttons on my pea-coat back on (the third is missing). That was strong sauce.

Apartment-Mate Needed
In completely other news, we need a new roommate here next year since Adrian is leaving us for a better place (a house in downtown Davis to be exact). Anyone who wants to have the Casbah experience may contact me asap. The end.

Randomness

Last Samurai
Returning from Tahoe on Friday, Kwisty and I went to see The Last Samurai.
Overall I think the movie was very good. The only thing that bothered me was in the end when the two gatling guns managed to kill everyone in front of them even though they were only marginally capable of swivelling. There was actually a scene looking down the barrel where one could clearly see people dying all over the place in complete disregard for where the gun was actually pointed. I dunno, that one part was just strikingly more problematic than anything else in the movie.

Runway Airplane
"'Run-A-way' airplane or 'RUNWAY airplane?'" "Yea I was a bit confused abotu that at first too - its runWAY airplane" "thats a bit redundant isn't it? thats like 'road car' or something" "well 'driveway car' would be more appropriate." Aren't you glad I included that conversation? Thats me, Adrian, jill, and myself again.
Anyway, Saturday night Adrian, Jill and I went to Captiol Garage to see their friends' band Runway Airplane. Azver randomly turned out to be there as well seeing a different movie. The end.

Today
Adrian roasted a sandwich over the stove burner because we're innovative like that. Then I jokingly said I'd pay him a quarter to make me one, and he did. It was hella good.

aggienaut: (Default)

Today in an unprecedented moment of roommate bonding, Adrian, Jill and I went to the local grocery establishment "Ray's Food Place," where we bought some items and may or may not have stolen $6,000 worth or material*.
You see the theft of a single milk crate results in a $1500 fine. Do the math.
"When the pot runs out you guys know I'm not gonna replace it" -Jill. "No more munchies?!" -Adrian. They were of course talking about the pot of candy.

In other news, one of my brothers friends who crashed at my place over thanksgiving, "the south african," posted pictures of their Davis adventures.

Right now my plans for break consist of: being slothful, eating Pizza Hut for free, loitering around Diedrichs, reading books I should have read for class this last quarter but only had enough time to find that I wished I had time to read them, drinking steel reserve, and hopefully watching some movies. There are a number of movies I've been meaning to see lately, namely: Master & Commander, The Last Samurai and Return of the King.

Tonight I may go cause trouble with the people I hung out with on Friday. Perhaps. Maybe I'll write a second entry about it. Maybe.

*Theft is illegal and wrong, we surely would do no such thing.

ADDENDUM
Does anyone NOT loathe that old navy commercial with fran dresher as a telephone operater? That thing is a crime against humanity I swear.

aggienaut: (Default)
Today I swore in the new ASUCD President and Vice President. I was officially confirmed about half an hour previous as the new Chief Justice of the ASUCD Supreme Court. I am now the highest judicial authority of these 27,000 students. In the words of everyone's favorite Strong Bad "yes I'm awesome!"

Signed to renew my lease here for next year. Don and Ray sound interested but haven't confirmed yet. Fantastic Dan is still totally in I believe.

Hung out with Sharsticks and Mario for a short bit.. ate in the DC with them. Sharonages was feeling very sick though.

Update: 12:58am
Nick here is totally considering coming down to Orange County with me over break. That would be so rockin!!
aggienaut: (Default)
Had an interview for promotion to Chief Justice of the Supreme Court today. Also had an interview for a position as a conductor for unitrans. Apparently 15 people applied for "3 or 4" conductor positions so.. psha on that.
Showed up at the anti-war rally for about half an hour. This cave-man looking hippy got arrested for attacking Joe Fitzmorris, a republican who was videotaping the rally. So much for nonviolence. My word of advice for the day: don't conduct acts of violence against people with videocameras..

My apartmentmate Steve decided to mention to me today around 6pm that (A) he and the other apartmentmate, contrary to what I'd been told months ago when I asked, had decided not to stay on in the apartment next year, and that (B) I need to sign the lease tomorrow (Thursday) if I want to stay here next year.
Psha on that. So now I've got a single and double room to fill. It looks like Fantastic Dan (AKA Adrian) very likely is in, and I hear Don and his roommate Ray are in need of a place to stay. I haven't confirmed them yet so if anyone else reading this needs some place to stay you need to talk to me ASAP and convince me you're a better choice than the crustiest doncore punk in town.

Also if anyone has a livejournal code, my friend Melinda wants one....

...and if anyone knows how to do haircuts um.. I need a haircut. psha.
